TORONTO — Making a big splash in a small
pond eventually loses its thrill, and most Canadian
pop artists end up yearning to make waves in the
United States.

But few even cause a ripple.

In Canada in the ‘80s ere are a number of
acts who've enjoyed god home-grown <areers,
including Gowan, Platinum Blonde, Parachute Club,
Tom Cochrane, Kim Mitchill and K.D. Lang. But
only Bryan Adams and Cos Hart have made major
American breakthroughs.

One might argue ‘‘What's wrong with a
Canadian career?"’ But artists want as many people
as possible to hear their records.

‘‘When something happens in the United States,
I'get 10 times as excited because it’s 10 times as
big’ as Canada, says Kim Mitchell.

PRIDE AND CASH

Because of content rules that force radio stations
to play Canadian records, many artists want to prove
they can compete against international acts without
artificial support.

Most big-name Canadian artists are signed to
the Toronto office of multinational labels, and their
records are released south of the border through the
American parent

But if the record is not a priority with the U.S.
staff and they don't promote it, it dies. This is the
biggest problem for Canadian bands.

Record executives have one concern: the bottom
line. It doesn't matter where a band comes from if a
buck can be made.

LACK EXPERIENCE

A major problem for most Canadian bands is
inexperienced managers who don't understand the
American market, said Joe Owens, president of the
Entertainment Marketing Group in Toronto.

Owens, an expatriate American, is also the
former manager of Toronto's Triumph, an American
arena favorite. Last year, Owens quarterbacked the
U.S. breakthrough of the song Soul City for the
Toronto-based Partland Brothers.

The key to becoming a priority with U.S. record
company staff is keeping in constant contact with
them — ensuring ‘‘you're in their faces," as
Predergast puts it.

Prendergast, who's Toronto-based, also has an
apartment and office in Los Angeles near Honey-
moon Suite’s record pany.

BETTER FIT IN

Unilike the '60s it's no longer necessary for
Canadians to move south. But the U.S. record
business is still an old boys’ network, and Canadian
groups better fit in, Owens said.

To be taken seriously, bands must prove they
are intelligent, well-informed about the business and
willing to work hard, Record executives also demand
public relations; théy don't want people who will turn
off radio personalities or retailers.

Almost as important ‘you better be their pal,””
Owens emphasized. ‘‘You have to go to the
conventions with them, hang out with them, have
beers, get drunk.”’

There is some debate whether bands looking for
southern success should sign with a Canadian or
U.S. label.

Owens favors signing directly with the Amer-
icans, which newcomers Jeff Healey and Colin James
have done. For one thing, the American label doesn't
have to pay royalties to ‘‘some people up north.””

MOST DISCS FLOP

But even if a Canadian band does everything by
the book, there are no guarantees of success
Regardless of geography, most records flop. And the
reasons are almost impossible to pinpoint.

Sometimes the timing is wrong. Honeymoon
Suite’s latest record, Racing After Midnight, was not
treated as a priority even though it was produced by
Ted Templeman, a vice-president of Warner Bros.,
one of the Biggest U.S. record companies

Singer Johnny Dee broke his leg while the
album was being recorded, delaying its release by
two months. Wien the album finally came out, it was
lost among a spate of Warner releases by heavy-
weights like Van Halen and Rod Stewart, artists that
would garner far greater financial rewards than a
Honeymoon Suite record

Owens said many Canadian musicians and
managers are also at a disadvantage because they
don’t have the killer instinct needed to succeed in the
competitive American market

But to 27-year-old Steven Griggs of
Woollaston in northern England the
glass-fibre boots worn by Elton John
for his role as The Pinball Wizard in
the movie Tommy were a bargain at
the equivalent of $23,000 Cdn.

Why?

For one thing, Griggs is a director
of a British footwear maker that
hopes to use the special Doc Martins
platform boots as
gimmick.

And for another, well, Griggs says
he's a real fan of the singer-song
writer.

ledge of the province and its people

hoped to fork out a bit less cash.

“I collect clothes and costumes
from the Victorian era up to the
"60s," Cowdery said, adding that she
intends to display the suit to raise
money at charity fashion shows.

Tuesday's sales fetched at least
$880,000 Cdn, with the highest-
priced item being a Wurlitzer juke-
box that went for $33,500.

Sotheby's estimates the four-day
auction, which also includes John's
Rembrandt etchings and Tiffany
lamps, will bring in the equivalent of
more than $6 million Cdn.

The 1,922-item sale catalogue alone
costs $84 and already is a collector's
item.

John, 41, singer, pianist and com-
poser, is selling everything in the
collection he put together over 20
years and kept at Woodside, his
mansion near Windsor, west of Lon.
don.

John, a millionaire many times
over, rarely gives interviews but
prepared a videotape to explain why
he is selling his collection.

“People will say I need the money,

is ridiculous,” he says on the
video. “I just bought things that I
liked, whether they were cheap or
expensive.

Blue Lake camp
a great success

The Summer Camp Program at
Blue Lake Forestry Centre was a
great success this year. From July 3
to Aug. 19, 361 children attended
summer camp at the centre.

The program keeps the campers
busy. The campers receive lessons in
topics such as orienteering, wild
erness survival, first aid, wildlife
studies, forestry, and ecology. When
the campers are not in the learning
sessions they take part in games,
erafts or quiet time. In their free
time, they can swim, canoe, fish or
hike.

All of the campers go on an
overnight hike during their stay.
They cook their supper and breakfast
on a campfire and sleep under tarps.

Campers may end up at any one of
four potential campsites. This is
usually a highlight of the week.

The campfires in the evenings
include skits, songs, and games. The
last campfire of the week is visited
by the “Kingaroo”. This is a
mysterious character that comes to
the campfire and tells stories about
his adventures in the woods.

For 1988, Blue Lake offered a
western campout. This was an
overnight camping trip on horseback.
The horses and guides were provided
by J & N Trail Rides of Fairmont.

Blue Lake is owned and operated
by the B.C. Forestry Association, a

the wise use and management of
forest lands.

1962. He has been an active partici

For the past 10 years, Bryn has been

ces of secretary and, most recently,
vice president.
