CASTLEGAR NEWS, thursday, November 23, 1978 Burlingame Returns Jon. 15 Coach's Suspension Reduced By ROY GOETTING The suspension of Castle- gar Rebels’ coach Doug Burlin- game, has been changed as a result of the Nov, 18 hearing in Yancouver, from one year (Oct. IM, 1978 to Oct. 15, 1979) to three months (Oct. 14, 1978 to Jan. 5, 1979), *- "Darwin Mott has agreed to coach the Rebels for that period of time. Rich Hlookoff asked for, and received, his release from the Rebels, at the regular executive meeting held Mon- day. He has been asked to try out with the Kamloops Chiefs and we wish him the best. Maybe they should change their name to the Kamloops Ex- Rebels — what with the Kirbys, Glen Sorenson, and now, Hloo- koff. » 8 8 In last Saturday's game here against Rossland War- riors, final score was Rebels 8, Warriors 6, Sounds like a close game doesn't it? But it wasn't. Rebels made 72 shots on Rossland goalie Hoss Drake. Not bad, considering there are only 60 minutes of playing time. War- riors' shots on Castlegar were 36. Rossland’s Mike Oliver scored the first goal of the game, coming at 11:02, assisted by Bob Drake. Four minutes later, it was Castlegar's turn, Bruce Martin from Dave Kani- gan and Bruno Tassone. Rossland’s second goal of the period was by Rick Domi- nici, from Bill Nazaroff and John Caron at 16:49, and the final goal of the first period was scored by Bruno Tassone from Bruce Martin. The only penalty of the period went to Rossland’s David Espenhain — two minutes for interference. The score at the end of the first period tied at 2, The second period was . only 30 seconds old, when Bruce Martin got his second goal of the game, assisted by Bruno Tassone at 7:09, goalie Tim Stubbins got a penalty for roughing and about 20 seconds Jater, Rossland's Mike Oliver scored his second goal of the night. A power play effort assisted Bill Nazaroff and John Caron. Rebels’ fourth goal was an important one for Erie Horn, his first of the season. He has the puck to prove it, one of the 17 that went home with some lucky fans that night. Li bas DOUG BURLINGAME ++. three months At 18:37 Bruce Martin picked up his third goal of the night, assisted by Darell Sawat- sky. This was a hat-trick for Bruce. The score at the end of the second period was Castlegar 5, Rossland 3, At the four-minute mark of the third period, Mike Oliver RICK HLOOKOFF ... leaves Rebels scored his third goal of the night, unassisted. Rossland's fifth goal, which tied the hockey game up at 5 apiece, was a power play effort by Bill Naza- roff, assisted by John Caron and Dave McKinnon. Colin Ward was sitting out a two- minute penalty for tripping at the time. ASPORTS/ Former Rebels Express Thanks to Executive The following letter, from former Rebels Brian Verigin and Steve Bozek, was received by Mel McMullen, president of the Castlegar Jr. Rebel execu- tive and presented to the executive as a whole at the Oct. 16 meeting. Even though the letter is dated at this point, it was felt that it would still be of interest to our readers, Dear Mr. Me! McMullen and Executive: Tam writing this letter on behalf of Steven Bozek and myself, Brian Verigin. I would like to express my sincerest thanks to you and the past executive, for making the Reb- els a success which, in turn, helped Steve and I receive a full scholarship from Northern Michigan University. Steve and I have just found out we made the team. Out of 80 that attended the camp, 28 were picked for the squad. Because we are only freshmen, first year players, it will be difficult to play in every game of the season's schedule, since the coach only dresses 20 players per game. There were only six new players picked to the team this year which leaves 22 veterans back from last year. It will take a great deal of work to play, but we will never give up and will show what Castlegar has got. Before I sign off, I would like to say that I hope you have another successful year with your team this coming season, Brian Verigin Steven Bozek ERIC HORN «++ Rebels firat Goalie At 10:50, Bruno Tassone put the Rebels ahead with their sixth goal and, at 14:16, Ken Sherstobitoff got his first goal of the night, then Warriors’ Rick Dominice from Bill Naza- roff got Rossland's final goal of the game, At 18:12, Terry Hali- sheff got a power play goal, assisted by Bruce Martin and Bruno Tassone. Final score was Castlegar 8, Rossland 6. I think Castlegar had most of the play in this game, but Rossland was in till the final minutes — at least on the scoreboard, Friday at 8:30, it's Grand Forks here for the first time this year. They are a much stronger club than last year's, the only team from the East or West to beat Trail Jr. Smoke Eaters this year. They also defeated Spokane last Friday 6 to 4. This is the team I expect our Rebels to meet in the first round of the playoffs, come mid- February, 1979. A new feature will appear in our programs, commencing with tomorrow's game — the up-to-date league standing for the East and West divisions. os 8 Our own point leaders to Nov. 18 are as follows: Player GA Bruce Martin 12 16 Terry Halisheff 11° 9 Bruno Tassone 8 4 Dave Kanigan 8 Ron Sherstobitoff 5 H * * 8 Penalties: Bruno Tassone, 72 minutes Ron Boyd, 63 minutes Tim McDonald, 56 minutes Annual Oglow Bonspiel Stasila Rink Champs A total of 12 rinks par- ticipated in the Castlegar La- dies’ Curling Club's annual Oglow Bonspiel Saturday and Sunday.
