Some $13,000 has been raised in Toronto and New York City in a little over a week to make the trip possible. Herbert Quinones Jr., who has been near death 30 times in his brief life because of a birth defect, was greeted on a tarmac of Toronto Internationa! Air- port by an ambulance and whisked 35 kilometres to the downtown hospital in a three- vehicle cavalcade with police escort, An ambulance attendant carried the child, bundled in a grey snowsuit, through a press of photographers in the hospital entrance, with Herbie's par- ents, Herbert and Letitia Quin- ones, following behind. Herbie was kept on life- support systems for the flight and accompanied by Belay Abegaz, a staff pediatrician at Brooklyn Hospital and a nurse as well as his parents. Quinones, a $100-a-week Brooklyn grocery clerk, was clearly overwhelmed. He told reporters “I want to thank all the people who have helped us. We never expected this to happen to fast. (Some of the newer polyester fabrics do require ironing as changes in the appearance of the fabric have removed the no-iron character- istic.) z However, caution must be taken to avoid high tempera- tures in the laundering process, Polyester is heat sensitive and wrinkles can be permanently set in if the fibres are softened by heat. - Therefore, if-you are choos-. Things started looking bet- ter for CanCel in the fourth quarter of "78. The new kraft mill at Prince Rupert started up in a successful launch and has boosted total company pulp production by almost a third, ‘This was an expensive addition, however, as an old polluting ' sulphite pulp mill was closed down and it’s taken two years and more than $185 million to bring the new one on line. THE FIRE LAST JUNE 17 at Castlegar was a bad one. Estimated damage was in ex- cess of $6 million and it came at a time just as a new fully- modern section of the mill was being integrated into the pro- duction flow with the hope of cashing in on soaring lumber prices and a favorable dollar situation, “2 Full co-operation by labor unions and other companies, however, resulted in a rapid turned to the discipline of the marketplace.” i “ANCEL AND ITS PRE- decessor. companies have had other worrisome years- but. latterly CanCel has had quite a few good ones leading up to "78, And,. if the pulp market stays firm and world economies ,im- . prove it now owns a lot of shiny new. pulping and sawing faci- ‘lities that are whirring away to inspire a spectacular 1979. The main busiriess is to manufacture softwood kraft ‘pulp which is the base of several kinds of paper, in- cluding printing, fine writing, specialty papers, boards: and tissues. CanCel makes itat two sites — Prince Rupert and Castlegar, and produces rough- ly 1,600 metric. tonnes per day. The ‘economics. of the day can dictate demand and prices. Washouts meant that -the normal supply of woodchips for the pulp operations was cut and the bill for rebuilding roads in the company's, forestry operations . will top $1.5 million. CanCel is 98 per cent Canadian-owned now, a distinct about-face from former years.
