As Castlegar News dune 3, 1990 New investments possible Hong Kong investors interested, Stan says By CasNews Staff Five Hong Kong investors are in- terested in the Central Kootenay area and more may express interest in the future following a trade and invest- ment exposition in the Asian city earlier this month, said a represen- tative of the Community Futures Committee of Central Kootenay. Harry Stan, who is also an executive director of the Castlegar and District Development Board, said he and representatives from Nelson and Kimberley joined economic officers from Island and the Lower Mainland, Thompson-Okanagan, and the North ‘Coast regions for the exposition from May 17-20. The Central Kootenay represen- tatives spoke directly to several hun- dred of the i 5,000 results, including allowing interaction between representatives of each B.C. region and Asia-Pa investors, providing a better understanding of the Hong Kong lifestyle, and establishing an investment. contact base in Hong Kong. As well, the forum provided the in- vestors with business information such as the fact that land costs and the costs of operating businesses are lower in areas outside of the Lower Mainland, he said. Those who attended the exposition, which was targeted at investors willing to spend about $250,000, generally knew what types of investment they were interested in before talking to the development officers and many are involved in the precess of emigrating to Canada, Stan said. Hong Kong investors who attended the event, organized by the Ministry of Regional and Economic, Develop- ment and the Ministry of Inter- national Business and Immigration, Stan said. He said the forum, the first such event to allow from Hong Kong is a lengthy process that can take up to three years, he noted. But cultivating Hong Kong invest- ment is also a slow process and one that must be considered for its long-— term benefits, Stan said People in Hong Kong are cautious experts in B.C. Kong_ investors, to meet with Hong had three direct and decisions are (usually discussed by a family before ‘any. steps are taken, he said. Stan said the Central Kootenay representatives provided the investors with information on a variety of in- vestment opportunities in the region, including a health-related product being manufactured in the area, a truck service centre, and a fresh-water Chile pulp mills slated VANCOUVER (CP) — H.A. Simons, the largest engineering firm in Vancouver and the company which designed the proposed Celgar pulp mill expansion project in Castlegar, is involved in two new pulp mill projects in southern Chile that will cost a combined $1 billion to build. The mills are two of three new pulp complexes planned for the South American country that is in the midst of a boom in forst industry develop- ment. Last week, Vancouver-based Cetec Engineering Ltd. detailed its plans to build a sawmilling and chipping facility in the southernmost reaches of Chile. But unlike the Cetec venture, which will concentrate on cutting hardwood forests of Linga trees, the two pulp ventures Simons is involved in are in Chite’s radiata pine forests. Chile’s softwoods are extremely at- tractive to local and outside investors because of their very short rotation periods. Unlike British Columbia, where softwood plantations take 80 years or more to reach an age where they can be cut again, Chile’s radiata pine stands can be cut every 25 years. “The driving investment interest there is the quality and cost of the resource, both in softwoods and har- dwoods,’’ John Montgomery, Simons’ vice-president of sales, said. “The big ticket item is the trees grow so fast — pulp logs in the teens and saw logs in the 20- to 25-year range."" Chile-has_five existing sawmills and two smaller paper mills, but Mon- tgomery said there is a strong likelihood that manufacturing base will expand in the coming years. The two pulp projects Simons is designing are expected to each produce 1,000 tonnes of kraft pulp a day, with the anticipated markets being Japan, Europe and the United States. One pulp mill will be owned and operated by the Chilean company, Cellulose Arauco. New Zealand in- terests holds a significant share in the company. 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT INSPECTION Until June 16, 1990 By appointment only. fish farm. The economic development officers also took along information about larger investments, such as resorts and apartment buildings, ‘‘just in case’’ any of the investors were interested in larger projects, Stan added. The government will decide whether similar expositions will be held in the future after considering the comments and criticisms of the first forum submitted by the economic development officers who attended, he said.
