Here-4There] With ‘Arlee We have friends who live part of the time in Beechy, Sask., and part in Oliver, B.C. They have huge ranches in both places — Slim and Florence Gates. Slim, as you would expect from his name, is tall, thin and silent. Florence is 5’2” and. pure dyna- mite, She can drive a ‘truck, break a horse, rope a steer, run a hay baler, top a hay stack and paint a house — all in between the times she is baking bread, getting meals, keeping house and raising two children, age 6 and 8. Again, as you would expect, she can talk a blue streak and runs me a close second but that is ‘the only field in which I compete. Needless to say, when we do get together the men find it very confusing listening to both of us at once. But. we explain as their never get it all said. Florence was here the other day. She drove the truck (full of oats) back to Oliver and left the kiddies with her parents so they could go to school, then drove the empty back so as to pick up Slim and two horses when the fall work is completed. I might men- tion in passing that while riding a young stallion in July he threw her and broke her leg — merely an incidental reference as that didnt’ slow her up any that we could notice. Sometimes I think living in a city all one’s life doesn’t exactly prepare one properly. Florence landed here after I had gone to sleep and that may have been why I was slow to catch on, but she said to George after I had made’ up their beds and served coffee. “I brought you ten bales of prairie wool.” (Of course I’m smart enough to keep quiet at such times but I thought - hmm bales of wool, pictures of bales of cotton such as those in shows like Showboat went through my mind. H’m I didn’t even know they kept sheep. I wanted to ask what exactly one did with 10 bales of the stuff but George was saying “Oh, you shouldn’t have done that, it is worth a lot of money!” “That’s nothing,” says Florence, “anyway, when we come through with §he horses we will feed some of it ourselves.” Of course as previously stated, T wassteeply but- not that sleepy: even I know horses don’t eat wool. Oh how I wish I had kept my mouth shut a little longer — how was I to know “prairie wool” is a special kind of grass — now I'll never hear the eng of it. Must tell you about our little neighbor, Ann Bradford, cutest little red head you ever saw and the best little 10 year. old I know. We have two pet rabbits at the Ranch and the other day Ann said — “Do rabbits peel carrots before they eat them?” I said not that I knew of. She was thought- ful for a while and after T had practically forgotten the subject asked if I had thrown some peel- ings into the pen, So the mystery was solved but I’m still chuck- ling. There is a logical explana- tion tho, on Labor Day week-end she watched the monkeys at Spo- kane and they held a carrot and peeled all the outside off — spit- ting the skin out before eating the rest. . IT suppose you are expecting a Teport on progress made on the cabin for Miss Stuart. Ah! well, all ['ve got to say it is “coming along as well as can be expected” but just wait and see, next weelc is going to be different. visits are necessarily short, we, have to both talk at once or we’d Page 5 te ie a eae ROBSON.
