It cannot get enough of either and all the energy of its citizens. should be ent on securing them. With more capital would come a demand for more wage earners and this very demand would of itself insure the carrying out of most of the ideas respecting improved condi- tions of labor which the wage earn- ‘Jers of Kootenay have thought it necessary to organize. a political party to secure, Not one word appears in the La- bor platform which would indicate that those framing it had given a 's ation to the needs of any other class of the commuity save the wage earners, Have the farmers of the Okanogan country no needs? Clearly the answer is that the Labor leaders consider all these matters of minor importance. We do not think the electorate of Yale- Cariboo will agree with them and. we believe that the great majority of the wage earners will also decide frow as their leaders would. have them believe. The concern of one is the concern of all and the wage earners of Kootenay will find that their truest and greatest prosperity can only be secured through the agency of a great political party like Revelstoke and all’ points east and west, including Kam \cOUVEr, ictoria, | a ithe ie Similkameen, ind Klondyke dis: ra 19 p.m. ally Robsoi * sundae, Hal bet | ean ad atricte: nd ¥mir, {Sal anda saad La seine ‘Spokane, North mobs, Nomheare, aaa Ordinary, dattee. taal only, + Hor all East pnited Ritadom and. all Er Eropean, and other foreign; jcounteies. The manner in which the commence- ment of this most badly needed building has been delayed is just an every day sample of ministerial neglect. Mr. Tarte is too busy fix- ing fences in Quebec to bother about the details of his departmen- tal work, Of course he is paid for doing it, but that is only a detail, too. Wage earners in Kootenay will find it much more to their interest to vote so as to secure their repre- THIS CONSTITUENCY. It seems to us that if the wage earners of Kootenay had a_ true realization of what rep ig thus constituency in Ottawa means, they would have hesitated before adopt- ing the platform they have and nominating a candidate from their own ranks to stand upon it. The impression that a stranger would get from perusing their plat- form is that Yale-Cariboo is a great manufacturing district where the wage earners constitute a large ma- jority of the votes and where, con- sequently, their interests are of pre- dominant importance, Nothing could be further from the truth than this, Yale-Cariboo includes the three great districts of Yale, Cariboo and Kootenay. In area it is larger than three of the Provinces of this Do- minion put together. [t includes two great rivers, the Columbia and Fraser, and embraces several ranges of ing and i at Ottawa by a man like Mr. MacNeill, who is thoroughly in sympathy with most of their ideas, than to throw their ballots away by voting fora Labor candidate who cannot possibly win, and who, even ifhe did win, would find himselt without influence or backing. Mem- bers of parliament without a party back of them are like citizens of the world without a country. Their complaints are not heeded because they have voluntarily cut themselves off from their responsibilities. So- ciety gets even by ignoring them. President J. N. Hillof the Spo- kane & Northern railway is report- ed to have said that the American i are now ov ked with wet ores, the inference being that the silver-lead ores of British Co- lumbia may soon be refused by them. This would not be an un- mixed evil. Kootenay is rapidly getting into shape to treat all of its lead ores at home and is already smelting about half of the tonnage valleys. Jt produces annually a very large proportion of the mineral wealth of the Dominion in the shape of gold, silver, copper, lead and coal. It contains enormous cattle ranches and a big area of agricul- tural land, Its forests are very ex- tensive. With all these natural ad- vantages, and 1000 miles of railway added, its population is still very sparse and scattered. All of its re- sources are practically undeveloped, and one might with truth say, un- known. duced. A little ‘i such asa Liberal-Conservative govern- ment would give the industry, is all that is needed to make our lead producers independent of the United States. a Liberal Meeting The Liberal association had a meeting in the Board of Trade rooms last evening.
