city has 11,000 hotel rooms and officials say the average
occupancy rate is 80-90 per cent. The best and biggest are
joint ventures with Hong Kong firms.

The Garden Hotel, the biggest hotel in China, has
just opened. It expects about 70 per cent of its 1,000
rooms and 720 apartments will eventually be filled by

duo Wham! recently played in Canton. In taxis, Taiwan
love songs blare on stereo cassette recorders.

“Why should I want to live in Hong Kong? asked the

In the disco of the luxury China Hotel, local girls in
tight jeans and T-shirts lounge around tables sipping
