Certainly something was needed to bring to public attention the fact that, though laws have been passed and studies and commissions held, on the whole women are relegated to a second class status, But International Women's Year holds nothing new for the Women’s Institute. Since the founding of the first institute at Stoney Creek, Ont.-in 1897, they have been working for the betterment of home and coun- try, and have seen the organiza- tion grow, and become the cornerstone of the Associated Country Women of The World, with affiliated societies in 68 countries, Tt is also one of the few non-governmental organiza- tions with official representa- tion at the United Nations, as well as a resource group for government departments in nada. The image of a bunch of tea-drinking grannies. was never true and is not today. - LEGION BINGO Certainly members get to- gether, but hands are usually busy, and topies under discus- sion could be: weed control;:a conservation project; the drug problem; a United Nations scheme; keeping the village history up-to-date; the local Fall Fair; or 4-H Clubs. The ‘granny’ image is fading too, as young people return torural living and find in the Women's Institute an ac- tive organization which can fill their needs. ‘The convenorships within each institute give some idea of ~ the scope of interests: °** Citizenship and Education —still emphasizing that an educated woman means an educated family; striving for equality of sexes in the employ- ment field, and respect for women who choose to make raising ‘a family their career: sponsoring libraries; and edu- cational workshops on a variety of topics.
