He proves that nice guys

K, guys, read it and weep:
He’s got rugged good
looks, lots of hair, a develop-
ment deal with Paramount,
two upcoming TV movies that
will be shot in Paris and in
Greece, and a dating history
with skater Katarina Witt.
Those of us with no hair, no
movies and, at best, a develop-
ment permit to renovate the
bathroom can only shake our

heads. But are we jealous?
Naw. With all that going for
him, Richard Dean Anderson
must be a jerk, right? A snob.
Arrogant. Selfish.

Sorry. Anderson’s charity
work reads like a page from
the diary of Mother Teresa -
Project Literacy, the March of
Dimes, the Center for the Pre-
vention of Handgun Violence
and the Special Olympics.
Even the National Enquirer
couldn’t pin anything on this
guy. The most dirt they could
come up with was the heinous
scandal that Anderson was

dumping Witt and getting
married - something that the
star of the now-defunct “Mac-
Gyver” denies. He’s not get-
ting married.

Oh, well, at least he might
shed some of that squeaky-
clean image by playing an om-
inous builder in the CBS movie
“Through the Eyes of a Killer,”
airing Tuesday, Dec. 15.

But on the phone from Los
Angeles, Anderson comes
across as just an easygoing,
Midwestern kid from the hom-
ey, rock-solid, politically liber-
al state of Minnesota, where
all boys grow up playing hock-
ey and dreaming of playing in
the NHL - just like Canadians.

“I wanted to pursue it pro-
fessionally,” Anderson says of
the sport he played almost
since he could walk. But after
receiving two broken arms on
his high-school team, Ander-
son’s hockey career was over.

“In retrospect, I wasn’t good
enough to make it (in the
pros),” he admits, “but at least
the dream was there.”

Anderson now lives the
dream vicariously, through a
celebrity all-star team he co-
founded seven years ago in Los
Angeles. Anderson and hock-
ey-playing stars such as Alan
Thicke (“Growing Pains”), Ja-
son Priestley (“Beverly Hills,
90210”), Jason Hervey (“The
Wonder Years”) and Lochlyn
Munro (“Northwood”) travel to
NHL cities, playing profes-
sional teams or NHL Old-Tim-
ers to raise money for non-
profit groups like the Rainbow
Society, which fulfills dreams
for terminally ill children.
