(CP) — When Okanagan Houseboats Ltd. announced plans to launch a fleet of 13-metre boats on Okanagan Lake this simmer, company officials expected to into opposition from valley will lead to pollution, crowded asthe vessels are handled by are also concerned the plan is just the first of many being prepared for the lake. Okanagan Houseboats built a $6-million marina for up to 100 charter boats on land owned by Ron Derrickson, chief Last week, Okanagan “Houseboats said it had surrendered its lease back to Derrickson because the company had arene itself too thin to handle both boat construction and charters. But the company continues to hold leases on about 50 houseboats sold to investors and leased back for rental to vacationers. Opponents say there are no regulations governing the number of houseboats allowed on the lake or how they may be used, and self-policing by the compeny is not the answer Wayne Devins, p of O North Okanagan, has called for government regulation and says the houseboats will be the safest craft on the lake, dio- ipped and able to with d a 60-degree list. But a committee of residents wants a freeze on new developments until a body is set up to manage use of the lake. “Right now, nobody has to take responsibility and I feel there will be a lot of regret over this,” says spokesman James Ryder. Lyle MacWilliam, NDP member of the legislature for WORKING WIVES REASON RICH GET RICHER OTTAWA (CP) — Working wives are one of the reasons many of the rich are getting richer. The top one per cent of Canadian families earned an average income of $143,061 in 1980 or $212,000 in today's dollars, five times the national average, according to a Statistics Canada study conducted last year. And while nearly 50 per cent of the income of the country’s 63,250 highest-income families came from self-employment and investment, a third of the families would not have been in the highest income bracket had the wife not worked. Adjusting 1980 dollar figures into today’s dollars, the average income of wives in high-income families was $33,452 compared with $9,207 for wives in all families. The study noted the increasing participation of wives im the work force between 1970 and 1980 was more among the well-to-do. In 1970 only 36 per cent of the wives in the highest-income families worked, compared with 44 per cent in all families. But, by 1960, 59 per cent of wives in high-income families worked, compared with 56 per cent in all families. The study was based on 1981 census data, but Abdul Rashid, author of the study, said Tuesday the general characteristics of high-income families would still apply. The study also found “work activity in most high-income families continued well beyond the normal age of retirement.” “The impact of high-income families on the rest of " Rashid noted in his study. They tend to earn more than they need to live on and their savings are an important source of investment and thus of economic stimulation. The heads of these families often hold important positions in society and may be involved in decisions which have a direct impact on a large segment of society. Some of the characteristics found by the study are: @ One-third of high-income families were headed by a doctor or business executive. Other rich include lawyers, dentists, stockbrokers and farmers. e@ One in 20 rich families collected unemployment insurance. e Eighty per cent earned investment income of on average more than $40,000 a year, 10 times that of the average investor. © The rich have bigger homes, with nine rooms and an average price tag of $303,687, compared with six-room homes worth about $111,105 for the average Canadian. © The rich tend to be better-educated, with about half the families having at least one spouse with a university degree compared with 14 per cent for all families. But high-income families have more going for them than a good education and well-paying jobs, Rashid notes. “Birth and initial circumstances of an individual are important factors towards one’s economic position.” And they “control a disproportionately large share of income generating assets. “This factor, along with their savings out of current income, ensures a continuing and growing stream of large income for these families,” Rashid writes. In other words, the rich are getting richer and will continue to do so. RETIREMENT SALE 200 OFF ALL GROCERIES AND GIFTWARE Caldset Groceteria 1038 Columbia Ave. — Phone 365-6534 an | impact study. Capacity to manufacture pulp is expected to reach 24.9 million tonnes in 1988, an in. crease of 4.3 per cent over 1985, the report said. Association president Howard Hart said in a state ment that the expected in- creases result from invest- ments after a period of poor earnings. The report predicted a 31-per-cent inctease in capa city in printing and writing paper. The growth in this sector “reflects continuing strong demand for these higher value grades, evidence of producers’ focus on new market opportunities and on products which yield a-great er return on investment,” Hart said. It's high-speed, noisy boats.” Local and regional valley politicians are looking to extensive new shore-zone plans to ensure they control what happens on their community waterfronts. Some are calling for a single regulatory body to control the lake. Okanagan residents who fear the influx of houseboats r HOMEGOODS point to problems on Shuswap Lake in the southern Interior during the last four years. Residents there have criticized houseboaters for being rowdy, mooring at private docks, dumping garbage on Tues. - Sat., 9:30 - 5:30 China Creek beaches and emptying waste water into the lake. The estimated 350 houseboats using the lake have taken over, they say Any problems on the smaller Okanagan Lake will be more serious.
