Weather officials ore predicting a warm but wet October Blame Bermuda for that soggy summer By BRUCE LEVETT Most of Canada — as you probably realize — has just undergone a particularly soggy summer. And you can blame a lot of it on Bermuda. Amir Shabbar, meteorologist with the Canadian Climate Centre, pointed the finger during an interview. “The Bermuda high-pressure system usually hangs over the United States Atlantic coast but this year it moved inland over the Carolinas and Georgia,” where it caused drought conditions. In the meantime, a storm track came in from the Pacific and curved north out of the U.S. southwest and ran head-on into the Bermuda system. The grumpy child of this encounter is a storm system stalled over the lower Great Lakes and causing all sorts of upheaval from southern Ontario all the way to Newfound land and affecting border states as far away as the Midwest. Southern Ontario in general and Toronto in particular have borne the brunt, with September rainfall of 214 milli metres compared with an average of 66mm. MISSES NORTHWEST On the other hand, northwestern Ontario — lying just outside the storm track — has had less than the average rainfall This summer has been cool and damp throughout the Atlantic provinces, with temperatures lower than normal but with precipitation ranging between 150 and 170 per cent above normal. Again, blame the weather system hanging around in the Toronto area Quebec has also been victim to the phenomenon. southern Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Shabbar said, “it has been one storm after “For provinces,” another.” Out west, there has also been increased rainfall “They had a drought going on for years, particularly in Alberta and Saskatchewan,” Shabbar said “It broke this summer with a generally good rainfall.” MIXED BLESSING However, in the Edmonton area, the precipitation caused flooding that swept crops away and ruined an estimated 300 homes Also, there was a touch of winter in mid-July when 25 centimetres of snow fell in the Banff-Jasper area. Unusual snowfall was also reported along the British Columbia-Al two welcome DAN TAYLOR 399-4118 OR 365-7241 Castlegar Hyundai Does It Again Time Offer! Financing 0.A.C. Vancouver's 45-day dry spell was their second-longest on record. “Forest fires, particularly bad the previous summer, were very quiet in B.C. this year because the early dampness kept the forests wet.” WHO NEEDS IT? In the matter of records, the Toronto area set a few it could have done without. For the August-September period, 401mm of rain fell, the highest combined total since they began keeping records in 1839. What's ahead for October? Well, that storm track is going to continue to hang over the lower lakes and the forecast — running right down the St. Lawrence — is for above-normal precipitation and above-normal temperatures. For Newfoundland and the Maritimes the call is for below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation. The Prairies should be colder than normal for October with normal precipitation. B.C., especially along the southern coast, should experience above-normal temperatures and about-normal precipitation. Shabbar points out the abnormal summer rainfall and has been aggravating a severe problem along Georgian Bay and lakes Huron and Erie. Sreat Lakes levels are high,” he said. “They have been high for years. The water is eroding shoreline properties and beaches. The levels are near-record. Land is soaked and basements are flooded.” Cancer Institute in Boston, received the blood before tests were available to rou- tinely screen donations for AIDS. The donor in this case was a healthy man who did not know he harbored the AIDS virus. Groopman said the re- searchers at first thought the infection rate was so high because the cancer patients’ immune systems were weak- ened by their disease and treatments. But other recent wise patients. “I would have to say that there is about a 96 per cent likelihood of transmission” through tainted blood, said Dr. John Ward of the U.S. Control healthy surgery infected with the Many people infected with the AIDS virus remain out- wardly healthy for many years, although they can transmit the infection. No one knows how many of them will eventually get acquired immune deficiency syn- drome. Since March 1986, all blood donated in the United States has been screened for anti- bodies to the AIDS virus.
