Not one of the 70 had any knowledge of First Aid, at least, none of them admit- ted it.” Two trips were necessary to bring all nine injured to hospital. Due to shortage of space at Trail, four of them had to be taken to be d by C: for another reason. For it was on that day,. that the Castlegar ambu- lance, the first in this district, began operation and made its first trip. SAW NEED FOR MONTHS Frank Richardson, owner and operator of the Castlegar Ambu- lance had been thinking about the necessity of ambulance service here for about 18 months previous to June 12. He had seen the num- ber of serious highway accidents in the Castlegar vicinity. He had seen the pain and suffering pro- longed until an ambulance was summoned from Trail or Nelson He had also heard rumors that _|some Castlegar organization or other was going to begin ambu- lance service here, Month follow- ed month however, and emer- gency case followed emergency case, but Castlegar still had no ambulance. of its own, It was a particularly serious auto accident.at Pass Creek bridge him decide to fill the need. Following the smashup, Frank and:Constable Howarth, who was then head of the Castlegar police detachment, were discussing the accident. “What a terrible pity that men and women, had to suffer their broken bones and shock on the roadside for an hour until an am- bulance arrived from 20 miles away,” they thought. “Why don’t you operate an ain- bulance here, Frank?" the police- men suggested. “You have all the qualifications.” Frank made his decision there and then and soon thereafter, the present ambulance arrived, early in June. We've trans- ported the victims of almost every kind and variety, of sickness and injury there is.” THE WORST CALL Most serious of the calls the ambulance has answered — and none have been or will be refused was the Blueberry Creek two car smashup last: November. : “That was undoubtedly one of the worst ‘accidents in the history of. this district,” Frank observes. “He was sitting at the supper able that evening when the phone rang.
