ing from serious illness, eee eee geet ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, AUGUST 28 1900 ‘SHE TAX SALES, © ‘Wemorrow Is the Last Day In Which to Redeem. Considerable} agitation, which may turn out to be needless, has been caused among property hold- ers in this city upon learning that a number of lots here, including some very valuable ones, are liable to forfeiture under tax sale, Prior to the incorporation of the city two’ years ago, the lands on which the provincial tax was due were advertised for sale. Many holders of property allowed it to be sold, knowing they would have two full years in which to redeem it. The time for the redemption of the lots involved in such sale ex- Pires tomorrow. One citizen, who had property at stake, wired his attorney at Kaslo to make payment for him. Much of the property in question, if the title were allowed to pass, would be needlessly sacrificed. Many difficulties may intervene in the way of actual forfeiture, par- - ticularly if the property is specially valuable. In the. first place, it must be proved that the assessor gave notice to the transferree. In many cases this was not done. In the next place it is absurd, from the dpoint of equity to that properiy worth thousands of dollars could be acquired for a few cents, A prominent property owner said that if the worst comes there will be a call on the legislature tor the pas- sage of a special act remedying the trouble. J. L. G. Abbot is now in Kaslo looking after the matter for several clients, California Forest Fires Los Angeles, Cal., Aug, 28.— Ten square miles of forest reserve in the San Gabriel reservation, have already been swept by fire, and still the flames are destroying timber.
