(in Ster: 3:30 ROAD 11:00 G6) **Y2 “Two-Lane Blacktop” (1971, The games that united Canada are recalled BY BOB REMINGTON r Scott Morrison’s book on the 1972 Canada-USSR hockey series, “The Days Can- ada Stood Still,” Paul Hender- son is quoted: “I guess war is the only other thing that could bring a country together like that series did.” Henderson scored the se- ries-winning goal for Canada at 19:26 of the third period in game eight of the historic se- E a Phil Esposito beating international teams for years. The 1972 series was convened as a showdown of hockey might between Cana- da’s best professionals and the Soviet hockey juggernaut. It was the likes of Bobby Clarke and Phil Esposito against Soviet stars such as Valeri Kharlamov and Boris Mikhailov. And Canada did, in- deed, stand still to listen and watch. It is estimated that 15 million people, more than half the entire population, either watched the series on TV or tuned in on radio. e Also on Sunday, Sept. 27, The Sports Network airs the latest installment of its sports documentary series “For the Love of the Game.” “Prison Sports” looks at the role of sports in penal institutions. © Monday, Sept. 28, on CTV, Pippa Hinchley and Sam Miller star in “Fergie and An- drew: Behind the Palace Doors,” based on the troubled romance of the Duke and ries, which began Sept. 2 and ended four weeks later. It was an emotional roller-coaster ride like the country had never seen before, beginning with the Soviets’ defeat of Team Canada 7-3 in the opener of the Duch of York from their wedding in 1986 to their sepa- ration earlier this year. e On Saturday, Oct. 3, CBC kicks off a country-music night with “The Michelle Wright Special” (postponed from an earlier date). It is fol- lowed by the finals of “The Bud Country Talent Search” and a one-hour installment of the country video series “Country Beat.” e Season premieres this week include “Shirley” (Mon- day, Sept. 28, on CTV) and “De- signing Women” (Monday, Sept. 28, on CBC). BY LYNN HOOGENBOOM Lt year, virtually every- thing Vince Gill could have dreamed of in all of the years he has been watching the Country Music Association Awards came to pass. He was the evening’s big winner, walking away with Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year (“When I Call Your Name”) and Vocal Event of the Year (as part of the New Nash- ville Cats). This year could be even better. He is hosting “The 26th Annual CMA Awards” (airing Wednesday, Sept. 30, on CBS) with Reba McEntire (herself a multiple-award win- ner from years past) and is tied with Travis Tritt for the most nominations at five. Gill is up for Entertainer, Male Vo- calist, Single, Music Video and Song of the Year. The reality of winning wasn’t all that far from his , but he hadn’t been prepared for one thing. “The thing that me is how nervous you get right before each award,” he says. “You really get an uneasy feeling in your stomach.” This year, like last year, Gill doesn’t plan on preparing any acceptance speeches. “My whole life is winged - in every facet, it seems like,” he says. “I would never want to be so presumptuous as to think I would win. I just take it all when it comes, and if it comes, and try to speak what’s in my heart at that very moment.” He’s taking a similar ap- proach to his duties as host. “I’m just going to try to do my job with some humor and with some class,” he says. “And I’ve got an awesome tux to wear. I bought it special for this.” He backs off when he’s asked for forecasts. “It’s so funny. You look at album sales and all that and think that nat- urally so-and-so would have to win, but it never works that way. Billy Ray Cyrus was nominated for a lot of things. Whether the success and popu- larity of that song (‘Achy Breaky Heart’) will translate into the voters voting for him, who knows? Whether they'll vote for Garth (Brooks) selling 8 zillion records, who knows? Picking who the faves are is kind of like picking horses. If everybody could do it, they’d be making money at it.” Gill is married to Janis Gill, who’s in the duo Sweethearts of the Rodeo. “There have been times of not the greatest times,” Gill admits when he’s asked if it has been difficult having two musical careers in one family. “But, all in all, throughout the 12 years we're been married, the good out- weighs the bad by a mile. Right now, they’re not doing so good. There was a time when they were doing good, and I wasn’t doing so good. It’d be nice to see them both get in sync for a while. But at the same time, maybe it’s good that they don’t.” et WITH A AD! CASTLEGAR Vv the 5-7266 CLASSIFIED GE COACHES CORNER Highlight Dover, Del. (R) (in Stereo} 8:30 G5) BEST OF AMER!
