Mallards Ski and Sport Shop was unable to ice a team this year because of lack of players. Savinkoff said he doesn't know why there are fewer players in the league this year, but he suspects that the elimination of bodychecking might have something to do with it. “We're down to three teams this year. We're trying to balance the league and some people didn’t like it so they aren't playing. We're not playing with any bodychecking this year,” said Savinkoff. He added that the league tried to persuade a teain from Selkirk College to play in the league but they refused because of the elimination of body- checking. In Thursday's season opener, Rick Penner scored four goals and assisted on two others to lead Hi-Arrow to an 8-7 win over Sandman. The first and second periods belonged to Hi-Arrow as they scored seven times before allowing Sandman to get onto the scoreboard. Penner opened up the scoring for Hi-Arrow after taking a pass from Wayne Zino, Zino made it 2-0 for Hi-Arrow after being set up by Penner and Randy Martin.
