J=>EPPJALK I promised last week that as soon as I saw the members of our Legion darts team back from their trip to Squamish I would give a full report on the tournament. Now, thanks to one of the women who went along with the team, I am able to do just that. Three events were held at the tourney : singles, doubles and teams, and there were 26 area representatives taking part. Teams were from Masset, Fernie, Nanaimo, Elkford, Kelowna, Kitimat, Kamloops, East Vanc ouver, Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Powell River, Prince George, Texada Island, White Rock, Vedder, Golden, Campbell River, Rossland, Cranbrook, Penticton, Blue River, Port Moody, West Vancouver, New Westm inster, Mount Arrowsmith and North Thompson Valley. All the events were round robin. The singles division had 17 players and the winner was Ken Walker of East Vancouver Br. #48. Second place was taken by Paul Hannsworth of White Rock. The doubles event saw 16 teams compete and the winners were Alex Reid and Chris Simmons from Port Moody Br. #6. Second place went to Graham Seiger and Max Butt of Kamloops Br. #5. In the teams event there were 17 entries with top money going to the White Rock team composed of Paul Hannsworth, Bob Cole, Bob Green and Mike Gilbertson. Campbell River took second with a team composed of Ralph Craft, Gordy Cronin, Leonard Ludwikowski and Jim Hilchey. All in all, it was a remarkable tournament and a tribute to the with Huy 111':f '1/g~ Pepper that six teams, Rossland organizers from the Squamish branch, with Motel, Spartans, Scrap, generous hospitality, Payless, Orwell Hotel and friendly atmosphere and Royal will battle it out over the chance to make new a three-month, sixty-game schedule starting Monday friends. Our team from Rossland and finishing on July 30. Games are to be played had a highly enjoyable weekend and good com- at two parks, Centennial petition throughout the and Cook Avenue. The only tourney. The Rossland break comes on the July 1 team wishes to pass along holiday when they miss a their best wishes to all the Monday game; otherwise, winners in their quest for games are scheduled for national recognition at Monday, Tuesday and Lethbridge and to thank Thursday throughout the the Squamish Legion as a three-month stretch. The league will also really benevolent and sponsor a golf and steak gracious host. On behalf of the local stag at a date to be anbranch #14 I would like to nounced later and teams add that we feel we have are reminded that all team been well represented and· monies due the league shall to say that we hope the be paid on or before May darts club of Rossland will 24. prosper and go on to many The local Legion sent a more such events as the large delegation to a one just concluded. Veterans of Foreign Wars The Rossland Slow Pitch celebration in Spokane schedule is out and it shows over the weekend along with like numbers from Trail, Salmo and Beaver Valley, Castlegar and Grand Forks. Everyone I've talked to reports a fine welcome and wonderful time. Thirty-eight members of Rossland Branch #14 hired Neil Murdoch to drive them there and back and reports say that this is the only way to go. No report is in yet regarding the Minor Soccer League, how many registered or how they are divided up. However, it is still early as some of our parks are still in rough shape. Perhaps next week we'll have some more data on this subject. It looks like the Labatts team has folded. It's a shame, but I guess they couldn't round up enough guys with the wish to play, so a team that had a good record over the past few years, has faded from the soccer scene. While on the subject, I watched some of the Whitecaps-Cosmo game the other night and it seems the 'Caps are ready for a good season with a convincing 4-1 win over the perennial NASL champs. Till next week, then!
