All graduates had been placed well before the end of the winter semester with ap- proximately half the graduates, starting employment with the forest industry and the other half with the B.C. Forest Service. All first-year students have also been placed in summer employment in forestry either with the B.C. Forest Service or the forest industry. Approxi- | mately 50 job offers were made to the 21 graduates and the situation was similar for the - students seeking summer em- ployment. i opportunities are not limited to local region — both graduates and first-year students had many choices as to the location they wished to work in the province. The increased employment. over the last couple of years reflects the general upturn in the forest industry in the pro- vince, as well as the move towards more intensive forest- ry in B.C. under the new forest legislation. The outlook for graduates of technical forestry programs for the next few years is bright. If this year's employment market shows signs of con- tinving, it will probably war- rant some expansion of the col- lege's forestry technology pro- Bridge Beat By JOY KEILLOR Responding with a change of suit : To bid a new suit, you may add distribution points: VOID =3 SINGLETON =2 DOUBLETON =1 The principle of signaling with a new suit is: 1)Non jump bid — an indefinite hand (may be strong or poor) 2)Jump bid — a super hand (forcing to game) 3)Leap bid — a weak freak hand (shit out). One Over One (1 heart (partner 1 spade (you) This is a bid of a higher rere! Bee) ranking suit at the one level, It may be as little as six points or as much as 18 points. Even with a minimum hand, opener must bid again (unless partner was a passed hand earlier in the auction). Responder will now be able to clarify his count on his next bid. Two Over One 1 heart (partner) 2 diamonds (you) This is a non jump bid ina lower ranking suit, consequent- ly, responder must bid at the: two level. To bid at this level, responder must have at least 10 points but could have all the way up to 18 points. Again opener must not pass. Jump Shift 1 heart (part- ner) 2 spades or 2 hearts or 3 clubs (you) You have just jumped one level higher than necessary and . shifted to another suit. This bid shows a super hand of 19 or more points and is foreing until at least a game is reached. “However, it strongly invites to slam if a suit fit can be found. Leap Bid 1 spade (partner) 4 hearts (you) This bid signals a weak gram. Enrollment in the first year of the program is cur- rently limited to 45 students and the current objective is to graduate 25-30 students per year. The ‘following students made up the Selkirk College Forestry graduating class this year: R. Armitage (Vancouver), L. Bowman (Vernon), C. Brug- ger (Kamloops), B. Dobbs (Rossland), T. Evans (Kelowna), C. Leitch (Nakusp), D. Mac- Kenzie (Penticton), C. McIn- tosh (Vancouver), L. McMartin (Vernon), S. Nelson (Coquit- lam), R. Noble (Ashcroft), M. Nowlin (Armstrong), J. Perkins (Jasper, Alta.), J. Ridge (South Slocan), G. Sime (Golden), J. Simpson (Grande Prairie, permitted to play at this trump suit. cee This bid is the shut out principle in action telling your partner of your hand type and destroying the ability°of-your opponents to find out: much about each other's hands.
