A reader writes express- ing dismay over the number of blank ends in a game he watched during a recent car- spiel and he suggests that after deliberately blanking two ends, a rink should lose. last rock advantage. Thanks, but no thanks. One of the things we can do without is an umpire to rule on whether the second end was blanked deliberately or because the skip’s shooter rolled out unintentionally. Who cares if the score ina game after eight ends is 1-0 or 1-1, or 8-7 or 7-7? There is just as much skill required in a low scoring game to hit and roll out to blank the end, and by the opponent in trying to create a situation where the end cannot be blanked, as in junking up an + end witha lot of garbage. You can’t gasbage up an end unless your opponent misses or gets a nose hit to give you the opportunity. In top competitive curling, blanking ends isn't so much an attempt to keep playing for an opportunity to score more than a single point, as it is to keep >sseontral .of the game by wretaining last rockjadvantage. You don't see a lot of blank CURLING: By Matt Baldwin Sponsored by TRI-X AUTO BODY . AND ENTERPRISES: ends in a game that often, It is tough to hit and roll out every time and usually that kind of game only happens on real good ce, There are certain situa- tions where I wouldn't hesitate to blank. For instance on the first end when you have last rock and there are no counters in the rings. Blank the end and keep last rock. This is true almost any time early in the game, even if you are trailing by a shot, By keeping last rock, you can take chances in your | Strategy, especially if you are leading, and even if they don't work out, you still have last rock to bail yourself out. Late in the game, blanking depends on the situation, If you are even playing the ninth end ina 10-ender, or the 11th ina 12 end game, I favor blanking to - keep control. The decision is © more * diffieult'onthe even end. Then ifyou blank, you've got‘to blank again. or: get. two, or: your opponent has the advantage. Sometimes you will see a skip take one on 11 looking forward to winning on an extra end, but. that’s mighty risky business, “IN APPRECIATION Castlegar.
