(Electric Light and Magic, George Lucas’ wonder factory), which was in an idle period at the time,” said executive producer Freddie Fields in explaining the leap in cos & “Inflationplays a big factor, the cost of materials as well as three union pay raises; also.the additional cost of the cast.” _ . Michael Grais and. Mark Victor, who co-wrote the original with Spielberg and afe producing the sequel, took a calculated risk and wrote the ‘new script for the same cast. They hoped it would win them over. It did. However, the actors and their agents wanted more money: to repeat their roles.’ ’. JoBeth Williams and.Craig T. Nelson star as the parents and Heather O'Rourke and Oliver Robins play “their children. “It was worth what we had to pay them,” Fields said. “They're a very close-knit group; they really act like a family. That's something that isn't easy to achieve with actors.” NOT INVOLVED ‘Spielberg i is not artistically involved in Poltergeist II, although he retains a financial interest. The first Poltergeist grossed $80 million worldwide, which would be reason enough for a sequel. However, Fields had other reasons for pursuing the project. “We have a strong script, one that goes beyond the first film to show you where the Povereet come from,” he said. Look out for Poltergeist Il Rs “There was a big ancillary audience for Poltergeist if people loving it on television and.home video whereas they wouldn't go see it in theatres. The movie chronicles one bloody chapter of the Stern Gang’s history that begins with the torture-death of a Jewish terrorist at the hands of British military police — whose main role in the movie appears ‘to be beating up risoners while darkly mut- tering “bloody Jews” in strong’ Cockney accents. ASSIGNS KILLER The gang assigns its top killer, Eddie the Butcher (played by actor Juliano Mer) to avenge the killing. Eddie is a nervous, silent type who spends most of the movie jumping and aiming his re- volver every time he hears a noise. He manages to wipe out British police headquarters in Jerusalem after three bot- ched attempts, but also gets all the gang members killed in the ess. Nesher finds terrorism or “violence through ideology” a fascinating subject. “I found myself being a member of a society (Israel) that was born through violence and lived through violence and by vio- lence. = “Violence seems to have surrounded me all my life.” But he says his movie, shot on. location’ in? Jerusalem, doesn’t glorify human des- truction like Rambo. But neither does it “say whether it's right or wrong, because it (terrorism) was effective in giving birth to the state of Israel.” Terrorists, he discovered, are ordinary human-beings. Before making the movie “I interviewed over 70 people who were in the Stern Gang, and today they are people who work in. banks, who work in insurance. They are calm people. “They don't have horns . and they are not particularly crazy, nothing extravagant — and yet they did what they did.” Even the actors got caught up in their roles. “They actually lived for three months as if they were in the underground. They became so crazy after a while that we had fights breaking out during rehearsals. “We had many personal animosities. People started flirting with actual violence as we were shooting. the film.” Crystal to star in BOSTON (AP) — Come- dian and impressionist Billy Crystal says a “mah-velous” opportunity came along and he won't appear on NBC's Saturday Night Live next season. Crystal, creator of the Latin character Fernando who_says everyone looks “simply mah-velous,” told WBZ-TV he is to start shoot- ing the movie Running Scared with Gregory Hines Sept. 16. “They didn’t know what was going to happen with (the program),” he said. “This movie came up and I really wanted to do it.” movie ” BILLY CRYSTAL . . just ‘mah-velous’ The world famous. . . (CP) — Don't ask William Hurt — ‘The Big Chill star who has appeared on sciten as a Soviet policeman, an outsmarted:lawyer and a bold, homosexual window dresser — if he likes taking risky roles. “You mean: ‘do I like climbing the Matterhorn with no clothes on?’ " asks the bookish-looking actor, who often answers, a question with one of his own. Hurt may not be climbing the Matterhorn, ‘but he’s probably taking another risk. One of Hollywood's most marketable male leads, the lanky, blond actor is in Saint John for the filming of Children of a Lesser God, a low: “key movie described by its director as a “special project.” In the film, Hurt, 35, plays James Leed, a teacher of deaf children at an island school. _“A departure?” muses Hurt, casually dressed in jeans, white high-top sneakers and a green polo shirt. “I hope it is — the principle is change.” The cast and crew of Children of a Lesser God arrived in this industrial New Brunswick city weeks ago to prepare for filming, which began last week. The movie, which is set in Maine, is being filmed at several locations, including the campus of RCS Netherwood, a private. school. DEAF CO-STAR Marlee Matlin, a 20-year-old Chicago native, co-stars in the film. Matlin, deaf since she contracted a fever at the age of one, sees the film as a chance to show the public what the culture of the deaf is really like. It’s also exciting. “It's great,” says Matlin through her interpreter, vA. great experience. Working with William Hurt is really something.” Matlin, Hurt and. director Randa Haines recently appeared at.a cocktail party held to give 150 New Brunswick guests a chance to meet the film's cast and crew. While many of the guests were straining their necks to spot Hollywood types, Hurt, the main-attraction, mingled quietly in his casual clothes and granny glasses. “I like meeting people,” he said, smiling and seanning the well; ‘dressed crowd. “It's kind of weird, but. . - by his~th -old son, A Hurt ae with the crowd, spending extra time with some of the younger guests. He was wearing a black trucker's hat, he explained, because Alexander likes hats. LIKES AREA Hurt, himself, says he likes being in New Brunswick and enjoys the Maritime fog. He has fond memories of two summers he spent in Canada, canoeing in Northern Ontari “Those were the two greatest summers of my life — before you began maniacally breaking down the order and categorizing, when you think summer is a vacation, the day is a day and maybe a millisecond is a millisecond. “That's when I found the land I like. Not the nation — the land.” Hurt’s recently released film, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, is a far cry from his current project. In the film, Hurt plays Molina, a homosexual sharing a Latin American prison cell with a Marxist revolutionary. The performance won him the best-actor award at the Cannes Film Festival and praise from critics. Director Haines, 40, admits that Children of a Lesser God is not standard commercial fare. But she believes it will give her the freedom many first-time female directors have been denied. . “This movie is off the beaten track of what most women directors have been able to do,” doesn’t feel under pressure to produce a box-office smash. “This is one of the special projects. “It's not a teenage film — it’s not about space wars.” Haines’s credits include episodes of television's Hill Street Blues and the made-for-television movie, Something About re * Trudeau new host Broadcaster Dennis Tru- Quebec AM. deau takes over later this Before joining the CBC in explains Haines, who month ‘as_host of As It Happens, CBC Radio's pop- ular current affairs network program. [eppercorn Canada Governor Gerald Bouey and William Kennett, inspector general of banks. “The total cost will only become apparent over time,” she said, noting that the major potential cost to tax- payers will result from Ott- awa's decision to fully guar- antee deposits above $60,000 — that is, deposits not already covered by’ the fed- eral Canada Deposit Insur- ance Corp. ~ Deposits of up to $60,000 are insured by the CDIC through premiums paid by financial institutions. The total amount of unin- sured deposits at the Can- adian Commercial Bank is $420-million, part of which may later by retovered through the liquidation of the bank's assets. But: the’ potential cost ‘of guaranteeing uninsured de- posits could be more than double that amount if the Northland Bank, | another western Canadian bank which was seized by the government over the week- end, collapses as well. The government is hoping the Northland ‘Bank, with $470 million in uninsured deposits, may survive through a reorganization or merger with another institu- tion. McDougall defended the government's decision to ful- ly protect all depositors, saying they participated in the bailout attempts by. leav- ing their funds in the banks.
