Wednesday, October,7, 1992 a Whitworth whips shorthanded Saints: Wi Nationally ranked U.S. opponent lays a licking on Selkirk College squad NEWS STAFF It’s hard to believe a soccer coach could come out of a 13-1 defeat with anything positive to say, but Bob Gurney did. The coach of the Selkirk College men’s team, Gurney saw his troops lose by a dozen to Spokane’s Whitworth Col- lege Sunday. ; And though some teams would have forgotten about soccer and turned to boxing long before the score got that high, Gurney’s group wasn’t one of them and that pleased him. “They didn't get out ofhand even though the score was up there,” he said. “That was nice to see.” The Saints went into Spokane with one spare, and compared to Whitworth’s 13 extras, Gurney said that was a factor. “We didn’t have the players out to field a really strong team,” he said, pointing to pri- or commitments like acade- mics. “The fact was, unfortu- nately, players had other obligations and weren't able to make it.” The Saints found them- selves trailing 6-0 at the half and though some teams would look no further than the goalie for a scapegoat, Gurney said that wasn’t the case.. “Chris Owens played excel- lent,” he said. “His play was not a reflection of the score.” Gurney said the Saints came out running in the sec- ond half, not looking at all like a team down by six. Taking a cross from Wade Forrester, Gramigni gave him- selfa birthday present and the Saints their lone marker in al- most a carbon copy of a goal he scored against Spokane Com- munity College last month. “It was a beaut,” Gurney said. “It was nice to see him score on his birthday.” But as much as the goal fired up Selkirk, it did that and more for the NAIA No. 4 ranked Whitworth, who pro- ceeded to net seven more. | “It was kind of interesting for me,” Gurney said. “The last 15 minutes went kind of slow.” The Saints next scheduled match is Oct. 24 at home Kelowna’s University College Okanagan pays a visit.
