ss _Castlégar News December 31, 1988 Pulpit & Pew By TED BRISTOW Castlegar United Church I'm not particularly Happy New Year-ish. Maybe it's because I'm getting older that I don't always stay up to welcome the new year in. Maybe it's because I know my failings too well that I don't make a long list of resolutions I'm definitely going to keep this year, even though I failed to keep them last year, and the year before that, and the year beforé that Now don't get me wrong. I'm not a New Year's Scrooge, humbugging the whole thing. If you want'to shout your lungs sore at midnight, enjoy! There's nothing wrong with marking the passigg of time, or about dreaming of the year to come. A Happy New Year bash can be good, healthy fun. For good fun, I'll attend and have a good time. Why not? But still, to me there's got to be something more worth having fun about than the last tick and the first tock of the clock. Time, by itself, is empty, just like I suspect some of those midnight to morning parties are pretty empty It's the content of time that's worth celebrating. There has to be some meaning to life to make the coming of more of life worth shouting about The most important time in our life is right now. This very day, this very moment Why? Because I can't do anything about the past. The past has been, and gone. And I can't do anything about the uncertain future, No harm planning a bit, but almost anything can happen to change those plans, so if I spend most of my time dreaming of the future, I'm only dreaming, and may be missing out on the living of right now The now of my life, I can do somthing about. I can do something worth doing, right now. I can look around and notice beautiful and good things all around me right now. I can say some important “Yes” to God right now. If I don't do these important things right now, will I ever? The Bible seems to stress the TELEPHONE 365-5210 importance of now whenever it calls people to make a decision. And it does that a lot. The Bible seems to view life as a series of decisions, and those decisions are always made in the now of\our lives, Let me say it all one more way. It's been said there are three kinds of people. Yesterday people are al ways living in the past, remembering the way things were. Tomorrow people are always thinking about some day. But the people who make something of their lives are the now people, who face reality, and see it for all the bad and good it is, and do something with it, today. That's why, instead of wishing you a Happy New Year, I prefer to wish you a Happy New Right Now!
