Deanna Picco could say the same about fit- ness, She teaches aerobics, weight training, swimming, and is a life guard down at the Castlegar and Like many of us, Picco sort of backed into her latest career. Three years ago her eldest daugh- ter, Tracy, wanted to become a fit- ness instructor, Deanna decided to tag along to keep Tracy company and to leam first hand about prop- er training techniques, To the sur- prise of both, Tracy chose to \. pursue other interests while Dean- na was. taken enough'with what she leamed to stick with it, «. Shortly: after she received her instructor certification, she was asked to fill in for an aerobics instructor who was injured. She teaches weight training Monday, Wednesday and : Friday from 9:00 to 10:00 am and follows those classes with moder- ate aerobics from 10:00 to 11:00 on the'same days. The rest of her week is filled with teaching swim- ming and working as a lifeguard. Asked which of her areas of endeavor she preferred, Picco answered, “T like them all, and for different reasons. Teaching adult swim is very rewarding and teach- ing the kids is fun. ‘With the _ School Swim on Tuesdays and Thursdays we have been offering a survival course which has obvious value in an area with all these lakes and rivers.” “My aerobics class is kind of special, Most of the ladies have been with me since I started and it feels like family. They consider it “their” class, but while there is a sense of possession, they are PeeWee Rep. Ho of 4, On Sunday the PeeWees had an, equally easy time of it as they. blanked: Nelson .7-0!' Mike Kooznetsoff got the shutout. Playing with just 10 skaters and _ missing their two top forwards, the ‘Castlegar team still dominated the game from start to finish. Ted always happy to see new people join.” Picco went on to explain how her aerobics class has elements of dance and choreography to it. Besides the cardiovascular bene- fits it also helps with movement, flexibility, and coordination. She takes care to change her music every month to keep the class fresh and maintain interest. She admits that women far outnumber men in aerobics and that while it provides a workout many men would have a tough time keeping up with, there still seems to be a stigma, a reluctance that may have something to do with it’s link to dance and the demands for flexi- bility that make this form of exer- cise perhaps more suitable for women, “That’s OK,” said Picco. “It doesn’t matter what area of fitness you prefer. Men tend to get into the weight training more, but women are catching up. I enjoy Atoms and PeeWees shut-out opponents on Hunter scored the only two goals in the first’ period with Shawn Horcoff assisting on both. ° Grady Moore opened the scor- ing in the second when he split the defense and went in alone ona feed from Jeremy Ross. They enjoy weight training because they see results quickly, They can see their progress in toning and developing muscle and it provides cardiovas- cular benefits as well.” The other aspect of the job Picco enjoys is the flexibility it provides. “During the summer I don’t mind stepping aside and providing an opportunity for the College kids to make some money. This frees me up to spend more time with my own kids too. Although some days are hectic and I feel like I'm run off my feet, I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else. I really enjoy what I’m doing and I can’t think of a better job for someone who likes people. It shows in the staff. They all enjoy working with people, no one is doing it just for the money.” the weekend Moore opened the scoring , again in the third, assisted by Wade Archambault and Darren Belanger potted a pair to round out the scoring in this one sided affair. While Castlegar played hard, Nel- son has been having their prob- lems, having lost to Beaver Valley 10-0 on Friday. On offense you need at least 3 players who can put the puck in the net 'G/3), 5 pl: [A/2], a bal: team where everyone contributes [Plus/Minus] and a potent power play, 5 Surprisingly, Chicago has only 3 snipers but make up for it with 6 players who can spring them free and the plus/minus shows excellent bal- ance. Vancouver on the other hand has only Dan Quinn who has more than one assist every 2 games, worst in the league. Coupled with poor specialty teams, [P.P. and P.K.] it would seem to indicate that they don’t move the puck well, an area for which coach McCammon must accept primary responsibility. Detroit has the worst Power play record and matches V S i it in killing ies. Their saving grace is . that like Chicago and New Jersey, they are hard to beat at home. On the plus side, the Rangers, Calgary, Pittsburgh and Washington can kill you with their power play. The Rangers and Washington are also at the top in ;]/ penalty killing which to me means good coaching. My personal favorite is team toughness, a category I put together from looking at penalty minutes, I think you can get a good idea of a team’s h: i and discipline by looking at these stats. I used the term wimps for those who stay out of the penalty box. In faimess it may be an inappropriate word for some of the league's top players like Gretzky, Janney, Courtnall, Sakic and Hull, but it does indicate offensive minded floaters who avoid contact. One of the many reasons that Chicago is at the top of the heap is that they have no wimps - zero. Next is New Jersey with 2, and Edmonton and St. Louis with 3, while &
