Steve, my old school-time buddy lives in Port Hardy, as he has for most of his life; I've known him since I was eight years old. Having lived all over British Columbia and Alberta, I've had to leave behind many friends in about twenty different locations, but through the years, Steve has been one of the constants. A typical day with Steve meant this the last time I saw him nearly three years ago: a few hours on the court playing rousing games of basketball, mocking each other when_a play didn't happen, taking the credit when it did, bragging the entire length of the walk back to his place, emptying the fridge at his place and watching a little television (O.K., it was a big television)... and then maybe back to the court for a couple more hours. What's not to love? I haven't played basketball in nearly three years. This week's column definitely won't be dealing with any of the hard core problems that I usually write about, nor will anybody be ,amazed with an extra-ordinary whirl of insight this week. I am going to explore something quite different this time, after all, a little senti- ment never hurt anybody, right? My other best friend is currently attending Baptist college in Edmonton. Shelley and I have been through some rough time togeth- er, and we have always been there for each other. I hope that doesn’t Does distance make a heart grow fonder? change anytime soon. Granted, I haven't known her for as long as I have known Steve, but that doesn't make much of a difference. For my birthday, she gave me a cassette by Michael W. Smith, which con- tained a song that said pretty much exactly what needed to be said The song was call, “Friends”, and it's a very powerful song Which brings to mind a song by the “Barenaked Ladies”, called, “Blame It On Me” There is a passage in it that I often ponder, and it goes like this: “Here you are and you're a hundred thousand miles away, they say that absence makes the heart grow fungus.” I'm not altogether sure I agree with that passage, though I find it holds some merit. 1 have to say that my favorite passage from the same cassette is from “Crazy”: “the lights are on but nobody's home, my elevator dosn't go to the top, I'm not playing with a full deck, I’ve lost my marbles. I’m a few bricks short of a load, but a full load always hurt my back. I flew over the cuckoo's nest and I'in never ever coming back because I'm crazy just like- you.” I'm positive this passage holds a greater degree of merit. It’s the attitude I keep with all of my friends, but none more than Shelley Despite the fact that most of my friends over the years will proba bly never see any of my columns, let alone this one, | wish every one of them fuck in their present and future endeavors. For most of them, it's been a long time, and I don't even have some of their addresses. Oh well, what can you do, right? Next week I'll deal with something much more hard hitting, though I never know what will end up in the paper until I start typing, “The young boy now knows the ways of the world And that he must not sit and be dormant Take an active role in keeping life unfurled, Do what he must, ¢ven when others can’t He has a broader perspective on life And he spends much of his time in deep thought Won't deal with the world in a state of strife “Cause he knows the world isn’t sold or bought He knows the world would move on regardless Of whether he had played the game or not He devotes his time to fixing the mess Although to the world he is but a dot And now the young man has devoted the lot To prove your life is your to plan and yours to plot.” “IDENTITY: part three” = Card Continued from 3B bidding, ordering and payment system which will allow compa- ing card pilot project.
