An estimated 20 million children in Canada, the United States and Mexico are expected to tune in to Car- toon All-Stars to the Rescue, The show has one aim — to deliver a series of hard-hitting messages about the evils of drug and alcohol abuse to kids aged five to 11. “You have to catch them while they’re young,’’ says John Agoglia of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the U.S. orga tion of writers, producers and directors best ~known for its Emmy Awards. It_came_up with the idea of featuring a ‘dream cast” of ‘the world’s favorite _cartoon—characters- and persuaded the studios and production companies to donate their coyrighted characters to appear together — something they've never __ allowed before. Seeing that silly wabbit Bugs cavor- ting with” big-snouted Alf, Scooby Doo and Winnie the Pooh should keep children glued to their sets, says Agoglia, of the academy’s committee on substance abuse. The show written by Hanna-Bar- bera animators Swayne Poole and Tom Swale tells the story of the all- Star cartoon cast coming to the rescue of a 14-year-old boy named Michael who is involved with drugs. The program's strong, anti-abuse messages include: dealing with peer Pressure, how to spot a pusher and drugs are for losers. The show took nearly two years and cost $1 million US to produce, Agoglia said from his NBC office in Los Angeles. He hopes children absorb the messages coming from the cartoon characters. “It’s a conscience-raising_produc- tion that should make kids want to walk up to their parents and say ‘talk to me about this.’ ’’ However, he admits the show's Producers have realistic expectations about.any impact the show will have on a society where the average age of kids trying drugs for the first time is 13. “I'm not saying this program is the solution, but it’s a small step. We have to grow a generation of non- experimenters, non-users. That’s the solution to the problem.” The show will be carried on CBC, CTV, Global, YTV, TVA, Quatre Sasions, Radio Canada and Radio Quebec as well as dozens of indepen- dent stations.
