Vancouver actor Bruce Greenwood and Winnipeg- born Mimi Kuzyk, who turned in a couple of seasons on Hill Street Blues as Patsy Mayo, supply the love interest as Striker's headstrong son and the ski resort's lead guide. Sa At the beginning of the film, Schellenberg’s helicopter skiing business high in the Rockies is facing financial failure. Enter Nielsen as the smooth-talking investor who harbors secret plans to take over the little resort and develop it into a massive enterprise. SOME TWISTS ‘There are occasional twists — a ski race which might decide the fate of the resort, acharacter lost in a blizzard and even a harrowing avalanche scene. Peter White's teleplay is classic melodrama, peppered with phrases like -“My father spent his life fighting everything you're trying to do here!” and “The mountain's my home — you've got no right to throw it away!" All of it leads to a predictable outcome and that all-time great closing line, “Let's go home.” But if the content is strictly B-movie, at_least the style is grade A. Schellenberg and Nielsen play off each other nicely, actually building some tension in the midst of the routine plot. fe In what is a relatively minor role, Kuzyk almost ‘walks away with the movie. Even in a bulky ski suit she positively oozes sensuality and her brief love scenes with reenwood are surprisingly erotic for television. Siberry’s reaction to star- dom is a bit guarded. “I like to be appreciated but there's a certain kind of popularity that's middle-of- the-road, where people see MAPLE LEAF TRAVEL you in malls and ask you for autographs when they don’t even know what your music's like,” she said, fingering strands of her red- tipped, erratically sheared outdoor hy. A h emerges from a sunset-lit mountain like some primordial bird, a flock of skiers silently draw their elegant tracks down an untouched mountainside. That isn't surprising, given producer Wendy Wacko's background. The young, Jasper, Alta., film- maker has turned out three excellent. wilderness documentaries in her brief career, including Challenge: The Canadian Rockies. Striker's Mountain, filmed in Jasper and at Cariboo Lodge in British Columbia, was her first dramatic feature. Wacko would not likely be dismayed by criticisms of her film since she has been critical of the Canadian film industry for being “too sophisticated.” “You gotta keep it simple,” she has said. “You gotta think about the average Jack and Jill who works 9 to 5 and didn’t finish high school.” Striker's Mountain stars August Schellenberg as- Florida boosted December 15, 1985 Caesar makes comeback on television LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sid Caesar stabs a button on the console and his image and that of Imogene Coca pops onto the TV monitor beside’ his desk. 2 It’s a sketch from Caesar's 1950s showcase, Your Show of Shows. On-the screen in slightly fuzzy black and white, Caesar and Coca play a husband and wife arguing about having a live-in maid. It's the latest in the new wave of recycled “live shows” from TV's past. The Best of Your Show of Shows, 65 half-hour segments taken from the classic comedy program, are being syndicated to stations across the country. ‘The shows also star Howard Morris and Carl Reiner. Reiner went on to spoof his days on the show when he created The Dick Van- Dyke Show. The explosive backstage atmosphere during creation of a live, weekly comedy-variety show was also the setting for the movie My Favorite Year. “We did those shows live,” says Caesar, sitting in his Hollywood office wearing chinos, cowboy boots and a red shirt, looking trim and fit. DON’T UNDERSTAND “People today have no idea what live television means,” says Caesar. “I think what's happened to comedy is that there are too many people between the comedy and the audience. “In the live days there was no one between you and the audience. You couldn't edit: You couldn't change it.” “There's no fun any more. Let’s wreck some more cars. And if you can't tell the whole plot in 10 seconds, forget it.” QUALITY DROPPED Caesar says the attention span of the American people is down to nothing. “When television went from live to tape and film it went into mediocrity.” Caesar doesn't put down everything on television. He says he even admires some shows, mentioning the current hit The Cosby Show and such shows from the recent past as All in the Family, Barney Miller and the early years of [ASH. Four years and a half dozen box-office bombs have passed since his last big hit, Arthur, yet the English actor, composer and ‘comedian retains enormous popularity, judging by a recent appearance before 1,400 college students. Moore answered questions and played the piano for about ‘an hour, bringing gales of laughter from the standing-room only crowd ashe slipped into the alcohol-dazed slur of Arthur, the irresponsible heir to a huge fortune whom he portrayed in the 1981 comedy with Sir John Gielgud. Moore, who stands just under five feet three inches tall, also spoke of how an unhappy childhood spent fending off the taunts of bullies with witty comebacks led him to a career bringing him up to $2 million a film. He -said his diminutive stature and an overbearing mother’ made for .a pain-filled youth but proved to be like I can just fit into like a glove with a very, very small adjustment.” Moore earned a degree in composition at Oxford University, but he preferred the freedom of jazz to the rigors of the classics and liked the interaction with an audience. i “By the time I was 21, I was in my third year of Oxford, I. had decided that I wanted to become a revue performer because I enjoyed going on stage and messing about and getting laughs — basically the story of my life,” he said. FORMED REVUE : He soon joined three former classmates to form the satirical revue Beyond the Fringe, which played for two years in London and two on Broadway. Moore and Peter Cook, a Fringe partner, later formed a comedy team that lasted for 20 years. They returned to New York with Good Evening and made three films, i ing the hilari d.
