A> federal grant, received through the Regional District of Central Kootenay, will allow the department to purchase an emer- gency vehicle to carry an expen- sive piece of equipment known as the Jaws-of-Life. The “Jaws” are powerful hydraulic cutters used to remove injured occupants from car wreckage. “T really didn’t think we were going to get it,” said Tarrys fire chief Ralph Merriman. “Only one out of 16 were approved in the whole province, there were so many rules and i you had to follow.” The grant comes from the Joint Emergency Preparedness Pro- gram and will cover fifty per cent because the $6 million pool the fund pulls from had dried up. ° Merriman and the RDCK were left with a choice of pulling out their ‘until the follow of the cost up to a i of $26, 750.
