The Miner waxes indignant and insinuates all manner of ulterior wor f waged in the iron, steel and tinplate mills. It is one of the greatest and strongest labor unions on the continent. , It is all ‘tight to denounce trusts, but the Miner should be sure that the or- ganizations it condemns really are trusts. Above all, it should not say anything on the authority of the Seattle Times, for that journal is as sublimely indifferent to facts as the motives for the Recorp’s of the methods of.the Canadian ma- chinery manufacturers, It acknow- ledges the justice of the criticism in the case in question, but yet says it should not have been made. On the contrary, the Recorp claims that the best friend of the Canadian manufacturers is he who calls at- tention to their shortcomings, Itis éasy to realize that they cannot se- cure the business of Rossland un- less they remove the defects to which attention was called. The Recorp desires them to secure this business and, in order that they may do so, desires that the radical defects in their methods be removed. The man or the newspaper: who flatters another into a belief in his own perfection is his worst enemy and the Recorp. would rather play the part of the friendly critic, un- grateful though that part may be. The Miner is unable to distin- guish between such criticism and its own favorite occupation of fault- finding. When blundering or care- lessness hamper the great industry on which the-prosperity of this city depends, itis not mere fault-find- ing to call attention to it, but is per- fectly legitimate criticism. The in- stance referred to in Saturday’s Recorp was: not the first of the kind, as many persons can testify, and such blundering has proved a serious hindrance to mining devel- opment, Of course, there are some manu- facturers to whom our criticism does not apply, but as regards those for whom the Miner. appears as cham- pion, if the cap fits, let them wear it. - THE MINER'S PLAINT.
