Byron and Ethel Trussler last Thursday to celebrate the oc- casion of the couple's 60th. wedding anniversary, Gold streamers, white bells’ and a “Happy Anniver- sary" banner decorated the home, along with several bou- quets of flowers received by the honorees, A special feature was the three-tier wedding cake, iced in traditional white with yellow roses at each corner. It had been baked by their daughter Margaret, and decorated by a nephew, Harold Jensen of Chase. : Congratulations were re- ceived from Premier W, R. Ben- nett, Gov.-Gen, Leger and Mrs, Leger, Lt..Gov. W. S. Owen, Prime Minister Trudeau, Ross- land-Trail MLA Chris D'Arcy, Opposition Leader Joe Clark, acting mayor of Castlegar, Andy Shutek, and a hand- written letter delivered in per- son by Kootenay-West MP Bob Brisco, Mr. Trussler's sister, Mary Schaff of Ontario also telephoned her congratulations, Mr. Trussler's brother Ralph, of Salmon Arm, who was the original best man, was on Konkin, supe hand with his wife, Helon, as was his sister Mra, Grace Mac- key of Revelstoke, who was the orlginal bridesmaid. Other members of the family who attended the cele- bration were the groom's sis- ler, Mrs. Betty Mason. of Castlegar, Mr. and Mrs. David ‘Trussler of Rossland, and Mr. and Mrs, Geoff Trussler and family of Nelson, Incharge of the guest book was Kim Mason, while Kathy Mason and Joan Mason served - refreshments. _- The’ Wishing Well was made by Marjorie West, Kay Kelly and Pearl Petts, with the latter two ladies also helping Margaret Trussler in providing refreshments and assisting in the kitchen. Byron (Barney) Trussler was born in 1899 in Wetaska- win, Alita.” which was in the North West Territories at the time. His family, which in- cluded one brother and three’ sisters, moved to Revelstoke in 1902, and later settled at Sid- mouth (near Galena Bay) then known as Hall's Landing. Sutherland on the upper Arrow Lakes, In 1926, he began work for Waldies aé fireman on a tug. Ethel Trussler was an only child, born in the South African Transvaal at Cleveland, outside Johannasburg, where her , father, George Ashburner, was superintendent of the Harriet Diamond Mine.,The famivy later moved to Canada and settled at Galena Bay on a farm. Mr. Trussler used to row the nine miles across the Sid- mouth to Galena Bay to visit with Miss Ashburner. On Dec. 30, 1926, they were married at the home of her parents, It was 25 degrecs below zero in Castlegar at that time, but the newlyweds finally reached Kamloops for their honeymoon, Their return trip was made in several stages—by train from Kamloops to Arrow- head; by boat (Minto) to Nakusp; by train to Rosebery; by boat to Slocan City; by train to Nelson; and back to Castle- gar by train—the journey achieved in one day. Their married life began in a small house located behind Farmer's Grocery Slore (later West's), and several moves were made by the couple prior to purchasing their present home 89 years ago. Mr. Trussler worked as a machinist and engineer for Waldie’s Mill, then on the West ‘Kootenay Dam at Brilliant for two-and-a-half years. He re- turned to Waldies and Celgar, working there for 45 years prior to his retirement, Mrs. Trussler and her daughter Margaret have been active members of the Anglican Church and the Church Wo- men’s organization for many years. A request has been made to the minister of municipal affairs for supplementary let- ters patent that will develop - the study. ace ee 8 2 Two separate applications for. financial Assistance were received by council and re- ferred to the finance ‘Winlaw Resident Peter i Zarchukoff Passes at 76 Funeral services began on Tuesday evening at the Winlaw Community Hall and concluded yesterday afternoon, for Peter Ephim Zarchukoff, 76, of Win- law, who died at Mount St. Francis Hospital on Monday. Mr. Zarchukoff was born in Saskatchewan on June 29, 1900, and moved to Ootischenia as a young boy. He settled in Win- law in 1927 and worked for the CPR for many years. He was also employed for several years by the Bell Pole Company. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Winlaw; two sons, Peter and Harry, both of Win- law; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Julia) Faminoff of Kelowna and Mrs. William (Polly) Veri- gin of Winlaw; - grand- children and one great-grand- child. He was predeceased by a daughter, Helen, in 1931. Interment took place in the Perry Siding Cemetery. Service is Held For Gertrude (Tiny) Smith A resident of Castlegar since 1948, Gertrude Elizabeth (Tiny) Smith, 61, died last Thursday. Service was held Monday from the chapel of the Castlegar Funeral Home.
