Beans To Beat Prices British coffee addicts who can't shake the habit or face sky-high prices caused by a world shortage are entering the bean business themselves. With the retail price of a . one-pound jar expected to rise to a daunting $5 by the end of the year, garden centres are doing a roaring business in coffee plants. Now a coffee marketing company is cashing in on the boom. It is offering 1'/ million small Arabica coffee plants for $2.60 each to anyone buying packets of their Brazilian blend. There is one small prob- lem, however. The plants take at least three years to mature. “It’s a long time to wait for a cup of coffee,” said a spokes- man. But enthusiasts who per- sist may be rewarded with’ three pounds of berries which finally reduce to a pound of coffee. “Well, it’s a case of ‘if the mountain won't come to Mo- hammed,’ ” said one amateur grower. Larger three-foot plants are selling for between $20 and $35 while mail-order plant firms are offering five-inch Arabicas for about $4.25. Ger't Inspected Grade A Turkeys Frozen, 6-12 tbe.
