It is “Alcohol- ics Anonymous,” the basic text of the fellowship bearing the same name. The Big Book has helped open the way to a life of happy sobriety for many thousands of alcoholics. It has offered evidence to relatives ~ and friends that problem drinkers can recover. It also provides revealing insights into patterns of “alcoholic thinking” to doctors, sociolo- gists, and others concerned with the problem of alcohol- The AA movement got under way in 1985, and in 1938 the pioneers decided to write down their experience and ideas and make them available toa wider audience, The book was divided into two main sections. The first reduced the alcoholics’ recovery experience to a statement of principles and procedures. The second sec- tion contained 28 personal stories of recovery from al- coholism.
