Cashews Photo by Phil Caiderbank TURTLE RACE CONTINUES By GRANT KERR VANCOUVER (CP) — It's another year and another tedious struggle for Vancouver Canucks in their quest for a playoff berth. The Canucks, winners just once in their last 18 games, are already in their version of the playoffs, however, as far as coach Tom Watt is concerned. Vancouver has an 18-39-12 record with 11 games remaining on its National Hockey League schedule and — believe it or not — the Canucks are still in contention for a berth in the Smythe Division playoffs. Winnipeg Jets and Los Angeles’ Kings have been almost as cool as the Canucks in the hunt-for two playoff positions but Vancouver trails Winnipeg by four points and the Kings by three. ° “We're in the playoffs already,” Watt said Tuesday in a snappy response to questions about the chance of post-season play for Vancouver. “These games are our playoffs.” Vancouver has won just once since Feb. 7, a 3-1 decision over Philadelphia Flyers, and returned home this week from a five-game road swing with just two points from ties. Watt said the Canucks played well in three of the road games. They got 1-1 ties against Quebec Nordiques and Boston Bruins with rookie Wendell Young in goal a lost 3-2 to Montreal Canadiens with workhorse Richard Brodeur in the nets. UNLUCKY TEAM “We had some awful luck on the road,” Watt said. “It's hard to believe we couldn't get a win when, in two of those games, we gave up just 4 single goal. “To be successful in the National League you have to be able to score goals. We're last in goals scored, s0 that tells you something about the team. \ The Canucks will be without their top goal-scoring centre down the stretch. Steve Tambellini, with 15 goals, has a broken thumb, suffered last Saturday in Boston. Gary Lupul, with 13 goals in 43 games in the minors, was recalled from Fredericton Express of the American Hockey League for tonight's game at the Pacific Coliseum against Buffalo Sabres. “The team has worked extremely hard in recent weeks and the attitude has been good,” Watt said about the Canucks. “We often deserve a better fate, but when you don’t score goals easily, it's not hard to figure out what happens.” Watt is extremely pleased with the development of Young. The 22-year-old netminder has a 3.24 goals- against average in 14 games since his recall from Fredericton in November to replace inconsistent Frank Caprice. The coach said one reason for the improved defensive play was the use of just four defencemen — Jiri Bubl, Rick Lanz, Doug Lidster and Doug Halward — in most of the road games. : “We shortened our bench, except for certain specialty teams,” Watt said.
