He will have an eppor- ‘tunity of seeing after the expiration of| . ‘his:preaent term. Next Monday the investigation into the charges against the police depart- ment are expected to begin, but it is not clear how it ia to be carried on. The police commissioners are the proper per- sons to make it, but Mr. Clute, one of the members, feels that-he is in honor bound to decline to serve on account of his law partner being ‘employed by the Lead of the police department to take charge of the defence. Mayor Goodeve, who:is:'a.member ‘of the commission by virtue of his being mayor, has not indi- cated that he will. decline to serve, although there is ample. reason for him doing so. In the first. place, chargee have been madé to him long ago, which he declined to pay any attention to, although they were of a serious nature. Then, when the matter was taking definite shape he pronounced, ata public council meeting, those sho.y wero pushing the matter for ani He has shown himeelf wholly anfit to sit upon the commission of investigation, and should be requested, and forced, if necessary not to serve. This would leave only W. F. McNeill competent to serve upon-the investigation.
