Maloney will have a chance to turn his hypothesis into reality as the Jets open their 1986-87 training camp with 63 players battling for a place on the roster. Captain Dale Hawerchuk said the extra bodies could prove for an interesting camp. “I think it’s going to be good for us,” said Hawerchuk, a CASTLEGAR & AREA RECREATION DEPARTMENT SEPT. 14 — Public Skating 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. Arena Comp: lex. NOTABLE ROOKIES Rookie standouts include forwards Pat Elynuik and Craig Endean, the Jets’ first and fifth choices in the 1986 NHL entry draft, Swedish national team defenceman Frederik Olausson, Winnipeg’s fourth choice in the 1985 draft and forward Hannu Jarvenpaa, a fourth-round selection in 1986 from Karpat, Finland. Along with Penney, the contenders for the goaltenders’ jobs includes Daniel Berthiaume, a junior from Chicoutimi who debuted in a 4-3 overtime loss to Calgary Flames which eliminated the Jets from the first round of last year's playoffs, Eldon (Pokey) Reddick, coming off an outstanding season in Fort Wayne of the International Hockey League. and Yannick Verstappen of Geel, Belgium. Some veterans who could face a tough battle to retain their jobs are defencement Peter Tagianetti, coming off shoulder surgery, and Mario Marois, who has frustrated the Jets by demanding a new four-year contract. Also on thin ice are forwards Andrew McBain, Jim Nill and Ron Wilson plus goaltender Daniel Bouchard. 220-pound Vancouver native who played in Italy last year, and six-foot-five, 225-pound Gerry Fleming of Montreal to add some muscle to an otherwise passive team. NEED PROTECTION “I think the game is getting away from the battling end of it, but still, it’s part of the game and you have to take care of yourself,” said Maloney, himself a hard-nosed player during his 11 years with Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto. “You certainly don’t want anyone intimidating or picking on your better players.” Hawerchuk likes the attitude Maloney is bringing to the Jets. “He's a gung-ho guy,” Hawerchuk chuckled. “He likes the work ethic and the toughness of the game. I think that's Shorts something this hockey team needs.” The Jets struggled to a ing 27-win, 47-loss, disappointing seven-tie record last year, finishing 17th among the league's 21 clubs. “Coming off the type of year we had last year, most guys are anxious to get back at it and show the people the type of team we once were,” said a suddenly grim Hawerchuk. “A team doesn't go sour in just pne year. We can rebound and have a better year.” HI ARROW . BEER & WINE STORE Open Every Day Til Christmas Eve HOURS: MONDAY - SATURDAY, 9 A.M. - 11 P.M. SUNDAYS — 11 A.M. - 10 P.M. COMMERCIAL V INSPECTION DE Costews photo Flue vaccine causes confusion By CasNews Staff A recently developed vac- cine against a type of flu bacterium that causes menin- gitis in young children will probably be available through public health pro grams by the spring of 1988, says Dr. Monty Arnott, di- rector and medical health officer of the Central Koote- nay Health Unit. Released for the first time in Canada in April, the vaccine against Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib) is currently available through private doctors at a cost of about $15 to $20 per vaccin. ation. Ina prepared news release responding to what he calls “a great deal of confusion among parents about the availability, cost and efficacy of Hib vaccine,” Arnott says the Ministry of Health de- sires a protection rate of 90 per cent or better for vac- cines issued through public health programs. “With Hib immunization there is a poor response if the vaccine is given before two years of age, and when given after two years of age between 50 per cent and 90 per cent of children immu- nized are . There- fore, the Ministry of Health is not providing the vaccine at this time,” Arnott says. However, he adds that by 1988, a combined diptheria- whooping cough-tetanus vac- cine that also gives improved protection against Hib will be available through public health programs. Since the National Ad visory Committee on Immu nization Practices in Canada has recommended Hib vac. cine for all children ages 2-5, Arnott advises parents who want to provide their chil dren with protection against Hib to consult their family doctor. Approximately one child in 200 may experience an illness with Hib by age five. Two out of three serious illnesses occur before age 18 months. Hib can cause several in fections among which men ingitis (inflammation of the covering of the brain), and epiglottitis (inflammation of the rear of the throat) are the most serious.
