Co-operatives are made up of businesses that are owned and con. trolled by the'people who use their ser- vices. Nearly 43 per cent of adult Canadians belong to co-operatives. Most are owrfed and controlled direc tly-from—the-+local—communities—in; which they operate. MacPherson will discuss how elements of co-ops are particularly ap- proprite for international_-develop- ment and the extended nature of the international co-operative provides financial and technical assistance to co-operative movements in the Third World. In Belize, a Canadian co-operative is assisting in the development of the in frastructure for credit union banks. “The buildings aren’t as fancy as those in Canada, but they get the job done," MacPherson said The CCA, along with an American group, is working on a major project in India, “Weare providing vegetable oil and the:financial returns will be used to create a Vegetable oil co-op,” says MacPherson. “By 1995, India should be self-sufficient in vegetable oit."* MacPherson cautions that there are The Canadian co-operative sector and problems to the co opefative approach ““It is extremely difficult work," he says, ‘‘and we must be very sensitive to the unconscious messages we bring to these aid projects. Whenever an aid project is undertaken, it has an impact on the local social and economic struc ture."* For instance, when aid is received by a family in a village, other villagers may become resentful. Sometimes the people receiving aid can gain advan tages over others. “In international work there’s never The “perfect” situation” when -deating with people,”’ he concedes MacPherson will illustrate his talk With slides. He will also discuss the history: of the Canadian co-operative approach to international develop: ment which has been active since the Second World War Pulpit & Pew By Father HERMAN ENGBERINK Lent is a season of repentence, when we are accustomed to examining our consciences and asking forgiveness for our sins in preparation for our celebration of Christ's resurrection at Easter. We identify ourselves with the Prodigal Son, who rejected his family and took off to ‘*do his own thing,” then realized what he had left behind and, determined to go home, asked forgiveness and begged for as much as a hired man would have We recognize God in the image of the welcoming father, who doesn’t even wait for his son to finish apologizing before he rouses the household to celebrate his beloved son’s return. This wholehearted love, this willing forgiveness and forgetting of our wrongdoing, is what we all desire when we repent Itis good for us to identify ourselves with the Prodigal Son. This Lent, this time of repentance and forgiveness, let us also try to identify ourselves with the loving Father. Let us try to be as mer- ciful to those who have wronged.us as we want those we have wronged to be tous. God's forgiveness is perfect; Jesus forgave His torturers even as they were crucifying Him. Perhaps we aren't yet ready to let God’s forgiveness work through us towards all who have done us wrong; but we can, at least, forgive those who come to us asking forgiveness.
