CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, March 5, 1959 New B.C. Room Popular in Royal York Hotel Authentic atmosphere of Bri- tish Columbian is now catching the fancy of thousands of Tor- onto visitors in the newly-open- ed B.C. Room of the Royal York Hotel, the Honourable Earle C. ‘Westwood said last week. The Ministre of Recreation and Conseration reported that elght 10-foot totem poles and a mural of Qualicum Beach have proven to be unique attractions since the opening Saturday of the Royal York's new wing. The famous hotel, long a landmark of Toronto, is now lar- gest in the British Common- wealth with 1,600 rooms and a convention floor containing ban- quet and meeting rooms decor- ated in the style of the provinces. “The British ColumUla Room,” said Mr. Westwood, “has already been used by two con- ~vention groups and fs heavily dooked ahead. It may well prove to be one of the most popular meeting places on the convention floor and its authentic atmos- phere will do much to stimulate tourist traffic to the Pacific Coast.” . Mr. Westwood also announc- ed that another permanent dis- play, is being built by the Gov- ernment Travél Bureau in the Avenue of FP at Casa -This year will be one of pro- bably “stendy if unspectacular progress” for Canadian business and industry, states the current Loma, a converted castle In Tor- onto which draws not only tour- ists but also many educational groups, The Casa Loma‘display, by B.C. artist Don Inman, features a relief map, native art, photos and the lin Cc Letter of The Can- adian Bank of Commerce, And after ‘1959, “the evidence points to the probability that this pro- gress will be maintained. A. M. MacKenzie that student fees at the university would be increased $100 in all faculties for the 1959-60 academic session. + The statement follows: “This increase, which is the only one since 1951, will bring fees approximately in line with the University of Toronto (al- tkough still a little lower on av- erage.) They (the board) have reached this decision after care- ful study and with genuine re- gret, because they are convinced that without this increase in re- venue they cannot maintain the standards of the university or ‘provide the facilities and services essential for a university educ- ation, This increase is made ne- gessary by increase in the costs of due to the commitments ‘of an unusual nature, such as supplies and equipment for the new building for chemistry and the ‘biological sciences, to be opened in Sept- ember next. £ The new fee structure for the University will be as follows: arts and science, home economics, physical education, nursing agri- culture, education, $322; social erful .to the econ: omy after unemployment eases. Large-scale unemployment in its second successive winter “is a human problem of great magni- tude". But continuing unemploy- ment should not be regarded as an indication that recovery has been delayed. The Letter traces similarities between the present situation and that of early 1955, “when the economy last stood on th work, ar law, pharmacy, foresty and H 2" ie of a new period of expansion”. It recalls that unem- 5 $527. These fees do not include the Alma Mater Society fee of $24, which is part of first term fees collected in September. 635 Students Writing Math Examination A total of 635 students from 69 British Columbia schools will write a mathematics examination March 5 in an international con- test sponsored by the Mathema- tical A iation of America and very large increase due to student enrolment, and the absolute ne- wessity of providing some salary increases for the teaching faculty and other staff.
