Shown (from left) are: Bob Taylor, Robson deputy fire chief, Dennis La Hue, Robson tire chief, Norm Mailhot, zone 7 representative and Stan Ozeroftt, training officer from Robson fire department Pulpit & Pew By TED BRISTOW Castlegar United Church Linus and Lucy are watch- ing baby Sally craw! along the floor, a happy smile on her face. Linus asks, “How long do you think it will be before Sally starts to walk?” Luey replies, “Good grief! What's the hurry? Let her crawl around for a while. Don't rush her! She's got all the time in the world. Once you stand up and start to walk, you're committed for lifer” Good point, Lucy. I think there are too many Linuses in the world who want children to grow up too soon. Society, too soon tries to organize children (why is or- ganized sports better for children than a spontaneous street-corner kick-the-can?), to téach them responsibility (isn't playing a very impor- tant responsibility of child- hood?), to push children into activities they're not ready for (I wonder how many children hate school because they “failed” the academic work of Grade 17). Childhood is a special time of life, with its freedom to explore and enjoy. Jesus seemed to recognize this when He recommended that adults become more like children (Matthew, chapter 18). Lucy was right. I think, to say to Linus, “Don't rush her!” On the other hand, the time does come when you have to grow up, when you have to stand up and be com- mitted. Some adults would like to behave like children all their lives, if they could. I was re- minded of this when the TV news showed us friends of Marcos at an extravagant party on the Marcos yacht, and, by contrast, poor Fili- pinos digging through gar bage in hopes of finding something sellable. Like the prodical son in Jesus’ famous story (Luke, chapter 11), the time comes when we should come to our Luey’s word for growing up was commitment. We need to be committed for life to something worthwhile. Christian faith describes being committed to God as the crucial decision life asks of us. Either we're going to accept the challenge of learn. ing and living the ways of God, or we're going to waste our years playing at this and that without an overall Wonder Fries worthwhile direction. choice is ours. The I once had a man come to see me about such a choice. He explained that he was nearly 50 years old, but still drifting. He had suddenly realized there were not a lot of years left, and that it was about time he actually start- ed doing some of those things he vaguely believed were important. He wanted me to hear him say it, in order to make him more determined to do it. That's how this man finally stopped crawling. It’s never too late for any of us to stand up and be com. mitted. Robson hosts training Twelve fire departments, including four from the Castlegar office, participated in a training seminar in Rob- son Sunday. The seminar was spon- sored by the Training Offi- cers’ Association of B.C. Fire departments from Castlegar, Robson, Pass Creek and Tarrys were among the departments at the seminar. The theme of the seminar was fire ground command and firefighter certification. The fire ground command segment was taught by Norm Mailhot, a training officer seminar with the Canyon-Lister Fire Department near Creston. Mailhot is also the Zone 7 representative for the asso- ciation, which consists of seven zones. Mailhot taught the fire ind command on using a fire simulator. Firefighter certification was presented by Stan Ozer- off, a training officer with the Robson Fire Department. A total of 31 firefighters took part in the seminar, which was chaired by Zone 4 representative and Robson fire chief Dennis La Hue. Exchange student writes from Japan By JOHN CHARTERS The program at the Castle- gar Rotary Club meeting Tuesday took an unusual turn when secretary Lorne Trickey read a long letter from Rotary Exchange stu- dent Teresa Lamb. Lamb, who is the daughter of Bert and Jeanne Lamb, is half-way through her year’s stay in Tokyo, Japan, and writes a most interesting account of her experience as a student and guest there. It was opportune, there- fore, that at this meeting the club should have as guests two students from Colville, Wash. who are about Lamb's age to enjoy the reading as well. Ilka Marie Tucker and Lee Evans, both of Colville High School, are spending a week in Castlegar on a goodwill visit while staying at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Don McDowell, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lamb, respectively. This May two students from Castlegar will pay a return visit to Colville as guests of the Colville Rotary Club. Other guest programs dur- ing this past month have included Paul Oglow — Mas- ter Carver; Carol Oglow — “To Greece by Bicycle,” Dr. Lesley Anderton —“The Ge- ological History of the West Kootenay;” and Bill Strong- man — “A Tour Around Ex- po,” all of which have added interest and information to the meetings. In the meantime, in the spirit of Expo hospitality, the club is planning a community courtesy and service award for pepole in the public and community services. The public will be asked to assist in making a selection and Jim Young, the commit- tee chairman, expects ,to make an announcement of detailed plans in the near future. Society hears speaker The Febrdary meeting of the Castlegar Hospice Soci- ety’s guest speaker was Chris Hardman SRN (Eng. land). Hardman told the mem bers about the establishment of the hospice movement through the dedication and vision of Dame Cicely Saun ders. Interest began during the 1940s and 1950s and finally came to fruition with the in ception of an integrated general care and hospice care unit at St. Christopher's Hospital, London in 1967. All cities in England are actively involved in hospice with each community having a home with at least seven beds where the terminally ill are admi health professionals who teach the patient how to cope with his/her illness. Thirty per cent of patients are dis- charged home once their symptoms have been con- trolled. Upon discharge the home care nurse and general prac- tioner make follow-up visits. As well the clergy and hos- pice volunteers make regular visits to assist the patient and family in coping with and improving the qualities of their lives. These visitations take place up until six months after the demise of the patient. Hardman spoke of the variety of treatments avail- able for pain control and the for symptom control. The home is staffed by innovative used to help divert the level of An airtight barrier reduces rafts onentanion Filtered fresh air 1 exchanger recovers heat s wea All hospice units come un- der the auspices of the Na- tional Health Services and therefore there is no cost levied to the patient.
