Castiews photo by Ed Mill NHL All-star features new PITTSBURGH showtime, folks. The NHL puts its talent on display at the 41st all-star game this weekend, beginning today with a legends of hockey old-timers game_and_a skills contest On Sunday, the Wales and Cam- pbell conference all-star teams tangle at the Civic Arena (TSN, 1:30 p.m.) Since the conference vs. conference format was adopted in 1974-75, the Wales has a 10-3 record. The Campbell ended a four-game losing streak last year, winning 9-5 in the highest scoring all-star game ever. There is little doubt the NHL would not exist in Pittsburgh if it were not for Mario Lemieux And there is also little doubt Mario the Magnificant, the teading vote- getter for the third time in five years of fan balloting with 308,000, will shine Sunday “‘They!re (Pittsburgh Penguins fans) going to expect me to be the MVP, that’s for sure,"’ says Lemieux, who will start at centre for the Wales Conference, making his sixth all-star appearance in as many NHL seasons As usual, Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings will start at centre for the Patrick Division The league's top players should produce entertaining hockey. Gretzky has 10 goals and three assists in nine all- star games. Lemieux has five goals and 10 points. Lemieux also holds the all- star record of four goals in a game and has the mark of six points ina game Considering that 40 of the league’s best players will compete Sunday, about the only check expected to be thrown this weekend will be to the winners of the skills contest. Any body contact is accidental The NHL borrowed the skills con. test idea from the National Basketball Association, which has a popular and successful slam-dunk contest and three-point shooting competition the (CP) — It's By The Canadian Press Members of the all-star teams for the NHL all-star game in Pit- tsburgh on Sunday (x indicates starters as selected in fan voting): CAMPBELL CONFERENCE soal — x — Mike Vernon, Calgary; Kirk McLean, Van- couver. Luc Mark Joe Thomas Rebels in trouble By ED MILLS Staff Writer An optimist would say the Castlegar Rebels still have a chance to make the playoffs in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. A pessimist would look at the teams the Rebels play in the remaining games of the schedule and say — yeah, right. A realist would look at the Rebels 6- 4 loss to the Grand Forks Border Bruins at the Community Complex Friday night and say the team's fading playoff hopes weren’t helped. The Rebels just couldn't stand the prosperity against Grand Forks blowing leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 4-3 before the Border Bruins finally took the lead for good with three-straight goals in a span of three minutes in the second period Neither team scored in the third though Grand Forks Wad the better opportunities over a Rebels squad whose defence proved once again that it is the weak link on an adequate of- fensive club. Len Rubner, Taylor Harding, Jeff Fletcher and Keith Semenoff for the Rebels, who were outshot 44-36. game twists day before its all-star match. In hockey, there will be six separate events, plus a, goaltending com- petition, pitting Wales Conference players against Campbell Conference counterparts. Each of the 40 players will compete in at least one event A total of $75,000 US is up for grabs — $2,000 to each member of the win- ning conference and $2,000 to each in- dividual winner. The categories are puck control relay, hardest shot, rapid-fire shooting, fastest skater, ac- curacy.in shooting, breakaway relay and goaltender competition The NHL tried a similar competition at the 1986 all-star game in Hartford, but it was cancelled because the players balked at participating Breaking with tradition suits league president John Ziegler “If this weekend is as much fun as we think it will be, then it’s here to stay,” said Ziegler. ‘We're receptive to new ideas and we saw the great ac- ceptance the NBA had “We looked at this as a chance to gain more credibility... This weekend is a celebration of skills. It’s an oppot- tunity to remind people of what we are."" The league may also make some gains in the eyes of the fickle American network television market. Sunday's game will be televised across the United States by NBC. The last time a game was shown on American network television was May 1980. What the television audience and the expected crowd of 16,000 at the Civic Centre are unlikely to see is a fight. A fighting major hasn't been called in a game since 1953 Denis Savard of the Chicago Blackhawks was scratched from the lineup Friday because of an ankle in jury. Replacing him is Steve Larmer Thomas Steen of the Winnipeg Jets was scratched due to a nagging back in jury and replaced by teammate Doug Smail Errors costly for Belczyk KITZBUEHEL, Austria (CP) — Major tactical errors cost Canadian downhillers valuable World\Cup poin- ts Saturday, although Falk Bey used the unusual two-run formatto tie his best result this year Canada’s only competitors — Rob Boyd of Whistler, B.C., and Belczyk, from Castlegar, B.C. — made errors on the same corner and finished 16th and 17th, the second downhill race “that Canadians have failed to crack the top 15 and the first time in Boyd's four-year career he has not finished in the points on the Hahnenkamm course. Norway’s Atlee Skaardal was not the fastest man in either of the two sprints over the lower half of the treacherous course. But his second and fourth-fastest times combined consecutive gave him the victory — his country’s first in the downhill since 1978 — with a clocking of two minutes 26.20 secon- ds He finished two one-hundredths of a second faster than first-run leader Helmut Hoeflehner of Austria. Seven: th after the first run, Pirmim Zur- briggen was fastest in the second run for a final time of 2:26.36 and third place VANCOUVER (CP) The $150,000 Canadian PGA cham pionships will become the second major Canadian golf tournament in the Vancouver area this year, af. ter the $175,000 B.C. Open, Cec Ferguson said Thursday PGA comes to B.C. “It’s virtually a deal. The spon. sor — Trans-American Life — has given us the dates (Sept. 20-23) and we intend to make this a first class tournament all the way,"’ said Ferguson, head professional at Quilchena golf course. ° again He said organizers will seek ap. pearance commitments from Canadians on the U.S. pro tour — Dave Barr, Ray Stewart, Dan Hallordson, Dick Zokol and Jerry Anderson The Rebels went into the game one point up on Beaver Valley for the last playoff spot in the KIJHL’s West Division and came out one point back as the Nite Hawks beat the Rossland Warriors 5-3 in Beaver Valley Beaver Valley has 10 games left’ - while the Rebels have seven. Among those seven are three against the Trail Smoke Eaters; the West Division's second place team, and one against the Nelson Maple Leafs who are first in the Division. The others are against Grand Forks, Beaver Valley and Elk Valley Raiders. “That (Friday’s loss) virtually eliminated Castlegar from the playof- fs,"’ said Grand Forks coach Brian Ulmer, who plays the pessimist in this story. “It's not mathematical but they have to play Trail and Nelson and I don’t think they'll get any points out of them,’’ he said. Not so, says Rebels Semenoff, an optimist. “It’s going to be tough but we're not going to give up,”’ said Semenoff “I’m sure we can beat them (Trail and Nelson) if we just pull it all together and play hiockey."’ The Rebels travel to Trail Tuesday to take on the Smokies who are coming off another win over the Maple Leafs. captain The 7-3 win Friday night at the Comin- co Arena makes it three straight for the Smokies over the Leafs. KEITH SEMENOFF . an optimist NOTES: The Rebels have signed two more players, the most notable being Mike Wood, a six-foot-two-inch, 220- pound defenceman from Toronto now living in Castlegar. He didn’t play Friday but will see action against the Smokies Tuesday. The other signing is Peter Halme, a forward who was cut by the Maple Leafs in January. He went pointless in his first game as a Rebel Friday PITTSBURGH (CP) — Centre Bernie Nicholls of the Los Angeles Kings was traded to the New York Rangers for forwards Tony Granato and Tomas Sandstrom as Nicholls, who led the league with 70 goals last season, was disap- pointed at being traded “T thought I'd be an L.A. King all my life,’’ said Nicholls, 28. “I've been there nine years. I’ve got a house there, I’ve got a lot of roots there."’ Kings trade Nicholls Granato, a runner-up to team. mate Brian Leetch for the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie last. season, was happy to be ing to Los Angeles “If Lhad to go anywhere, it’s the best place to go,” said Granato, 25 The trade ended days of speculation concerning Nicholls and the slumping Kings. And it came less than a week after a frustrated Bruce McNall said there were no untouchables on his slum: pging Kings, save Gretzky A girl playing hockey? Relax, it's the 90s now By ED MILLS Staff Writer Hey! It's the 1990s now and if a girl wants to play hockey with the boys so what? So nothing At least that’s the way Mary Short feels about it Atid, it appears her friends and teammates on the Castlegar senior novice team feel the same way Nobody teases her at school, she says, or in the dressing room. And on the ice she can handle herself fine. Speaking of the dressing room, the ticklish subject of changing infront of the boys is no big deal for Mary “can dress myself so when I get going my mom just puts het coat over me and when I get my T-shirt on she takes it (the coat) away."" Mary, a nine-year-old Grade 4 student at Woodland Park elemen. tary, began hitting the ice as a figure skater when she was four. But she tired of that after getting a taste of street hockey with her brother “Figure skating got boring — hockey’s exciting and fun ,"’ she says. She was risking getting teased, and that can be a big deal for a kid, but Mary saysit-hasn’t happened “They don't tease me ut it, there’s nothing to be teased about,”” she says “At school nobody knows I play hockey and when the teacher tells them they just look at me. They don’t say anything at all."’ Her mother, Irene, says Mary first started talking about hockey when she was six or seven “I did try to discourage her but then I said, ‘why not?’ If that’s what she wants... and she’s quite a good player now." No argument there from coach Rob Dunsmore. “*She's one of my better players ac tually."" Dunsmore also says it’s nothing special having a girl on the team “That's right, it’s the 90s, you bet She really contributes and she just fits in like one of the guys Mary plays all positions everyone on the team does — and has collected three goals so far this season If you didn't know she was a girl a fan probably wouldn’t even think about it watching from the stands. The only thing that sets her apart from the other players is three or four inches of thick brown hair sticking out the bot- tom of her helmet. Otherwise she plays a solid left wing and defence, though she lacks a scoring touch around the net, as she would readily admit "MARY SHORT ... her own person While she may be able to handle her self. now, both Mary and her mother agree that will change as she gets older That's why she only plans on playing a couple more years “T don’t want to go into peewees It’s too rough,”” Mary said. But she does say there’s always time to change her mind But if she does quit at peewee, at least Mary played, which is something she says a lot of her friends have wan ted to do but weren't allowed “Their parents wouldn't let them," she saigy—— If her on-ice hockey career ends at the ripe age of 11, Mary says she'll always have the off-ice version to tide her over “EM miss it (ice hockey) but I'll always play road hockey.’
