It’s not a role he’s used to, and he isn't planning on playing it very long, but he likes it all the same. The, 10-year veteran of the Canadian men’s ski team, said being an underdog gives him something to shoot for on the World Cup ski circuit this season. “I think being the underdog sort of takes the pressure off initially,” the Castlegar native said Thursday from his hotel room in Kananaskis, Alta., where the nat team is training. “If I don't get resultg early that preven could increase quickly, t initially I think it’s a good place to be.” The place Belczyk is talking about is 68th on the World Cup downhill rankings. He can't remember the last time his stock was so low heading into a season. “It's been a long time since I’ve been this far back. It’s not a problem, but it’s not a place I want to hang out either,” he said. As usual though, Belczyk is looking at his lot in a positive way. He says back-of-the-pack status offers him an element of surprise he hasn't had in the last few years. “It’s a different situation for me altogether, because they don't expect people from that far back to do well in races. I like that.” So with the first World Cup championships. slow and build up toward the end of the year. But this year I really don’t have that luxury. I have to sort of change my mode and get ‘to come on early.” He has an ambitious timetable is Ba For the first time in a long time, Canadian men’s ski team member Felix Belczyk is an underdog heading into the World Cup. for getting back in the top 20. “The first race is in Val D’Isere (France) December 7, and there's two more races before Christmas, so I have three chances to move myself into the first group before Christmas.” For someone without Belcezyk’s credentials that goal would be laughable. But the 30-year-old won a world cup race just years ago and has had a dozen top- 10 finishes in the last three years on the circuit. “The way it works these days in racing is that as soon as you get one good result it’s applied season. But he’s looking at his lot positively. “]’m looking for a medal in the Olympics, that’s my goal. And right now I want to improve my rankings as soon as possible.” Felix Belczyk “Going into the spring, I wasn't really sure whether I wanted to come back or not. But I went to the first training camp and made up my mind.” In the three camps since then, Belczyk has discarded the brace that had protected his injured knee and is skiing with the confidence that was hard to find at times last year. Now he says he’s focused on two major goals that would put an ion point on his career. immediately to your rankings, so you can go from the back of the pack one day to right into the first group the next day,” he said. Last year he did the exact opposite. Belczyk dropped out of the top 20 early last season after having problems adjusting to new ski boots. Then just as he was starting to put in a couple of top-10 finishes, a knee injury during training at Lake Louise finished him for the season. At that point, Belezyk was openly contemplating quitting the team. “T’m looking for a medal in the Olympics, that’s my goal. And right now I want to improve my rankings as soon as possible.” Both goals will require Felix Belezyk’s best season ever. “Every year is a challenge, that’s basically what keeps me going — trying to overcome,” he said. Perhaps foreshadowing his thoughts for the season, Belczyk celebrated his 30th birthday in August by going ski diving with friends. If things go according to plan, that will be his only fall this season.
