SILVERSTONE, BROKER AND, FINANCIER. No, 16 Washington Street The preparations for the two days’ celebration are complete, and the e oe festivities, owing to the energy of the committeemen, who have been working unceasingly for the past month, should, like a well rehearsed play, go off without a hitch, The suggestion of the Eveninc RECORD, to its many readers, is to fully enter into the spirit of the celebration. For what has the program of inter- esting events been prepared for, but for the pleasure of our people and those who honor the occasion with their presence? Make up your mind to enjoy yourself and you will sure- lydoso. As to the visitors, do your utmost to make their two days’ stay here pleasant, and you may be e~2> certain that they will come again. Houde & Company, Quebec Are Better than the Best WHOLESALE, AT * Crow & Morris, Rossland. «ae Rossland has lost some of the spirit which in its earlier history made the observation of holidays full of life, enthusiasm and go. We do not be- lieve that this is so, but think that the people here should take advan- tage of the present occasion to show fully that this is not true. In short, our : .lvice to all who participate in the cciebration is to throw aside dull care and have a regular, old- fashioned, good time. Tue ore shipments for the week ending September 1st have broken all records and have jumped over the 5,000-ton mark. It is only a few weeks since the 4,000-ton mark was reached and now another leap has been made. W. K. Esling has bought the Rossland Record from Eber Smith. It is about tlme some one took a hold of the sheet. For months past! it has looked more like the tattered | remnants of an advertising take! than an evening paper in a town like Rossland—New Denver Ledjre. The new management will put forth every e‘fort to gain for the RECORD an opinion decidedly con-; trary to the above, but it must be! apparent to merchants and business men that such efforts will prove fu- tile without a reasonable share of patronage. There was but one ob- ject in purchasing the Recorp, and fhat was to save the advertisers the burden which a third newspaper: would necessarily entail on those who were inclined to lend their aid. | The same amount of money could. have been expended to equal ad-| vantage, perhaps, in starting a new! paper, and it is hoped the t i men will appreciate the efforts to; give to Rossland a creditable even- 42 E, Columbia Ave., next Door East C.P, R. Pearl and Cassi- dy, ‘The Gallant Knights of Labor” and ‘‘Liberty” their new Eagle song, especially dedicated to No. 10, will be introduced. There will also be an Eagle ballet ‘and quartgtte, with highly realistic scenic effects. The drama, ‘‘A Kentucky. Thor- oughbred,” is very popular this week, so is Salvini’s tenor '’singing. Jim Hill's Telegraph,- Express and Ticket Offices Have Moved. The Spokane Falls & Northern Telegraph company's office has been removed from the old premises next Alderman C O. Lalonde’s store to the basement of the new Bank of Montreal building. The office has been very elegantly fitted up and is by far the handsomest telegraph of- fice in the interior of the province. Mr.’ J. M. Hayden is the manager of the office, as heretofore, and Mr. A. J. Jones, late of the Canadian Pacific Telegraph company, is chief operator. The Great Northern Ex- press company and the Red Moun- tain Railway company have leased the store at the north side of the building and have both cf them splendid facilities for their business. Mr. R. W. Bennett, the Great Northern Express agent, has been provided with ample facilities for his business, having a bonded ware- house in. the basement for heavy goods and one on the ground floor for smaller packages. Mr. Alfred Ruff, the present cashier at the Red Mountain depot, will have chargeof the ticket office in the same place, and the excellent location of the of- fice and the genial character. of Mr. Rui’s§ son will do much to increase the business of the pany. ° recently taken: from the’ speed. A Much Better Feeling Than for Quite a While. The outlook on the stock market is brighter today than it has been since March. Quite a number of stocks have taken an upward turn and every cheap lot. of Evening Star or Rambler-Cariboo has been picked up. The principal movements have beenin Okanogan and I. X. L., which have stiffened consider- ably. Monte Cristo is being in- .| quired for at a rise, and Big Three, owing to the strike in the Mascot, is being actively’ called for. IMPROVESIENTS GOANG ON. The main shaft of the War Eagle is now down about 750 feet, more, rather than less, and the main shaft of the Centre Star about 325 feet. Three hundred men are em- ployed on the former property and 100 on the latter. The War Eagle has now 30 drills at work and the Centre Star about 12. A large amount of money is being expended. in improvements: and an addition is being made.to the general office which will provide office rooms for the manager and the bookkeeper down stairs. Three fire-proof vaults are also being put in, so that’ the valuable records. of the company can be always secure.
