A very modern form of
trash — old computer cards —
may be useful in fighting the
problem of soil erosion, two
California scientists say.

Dr. E. Menefee and Dr. BE.
Hautala of the U.S. agriculture
department, writing in the
journal Nature, said cellulose
salt is an excellent soil stabil-
izer, *

Computer cards are made
from almost pure fibrous cellu-
lose, and the two scientists say
they have converted old cards
to cellulose xanthate,. which
they spread on the clays of the
state's Imperial Valley.

them. He told them that they
would suffer many things and
perhaps even be killed in the
name of God.

We can sympathize -with
their feeling of sadness or fear.
They are ordinary people like
ourselves who had no wish to

Coyotes

‘Turned Off Mutton

Roaming packs of coyotes
that had been killing hundreds
of sheep in Antelope Valley,
Cal. now ignore them — thanks

‘to psychology.

When all the other mea-
sures tried by the farmers:
fences, hunting and poisoning
the coyotes — had failed, Dr.
Stuart Ellins, associate profes:
sor of psychology at California
State College in San Bernadino,
stepped in.

‘The answer, he felt, was to
convince the coyotes that eat-
ing sheep's meat was bad for
them. So he and his students
injected an emetic into several

sheep and spread

. them around the valley.

The coyotes: couldn't be- ,
lieve their luck. All this meat
lying around waiting to be
eaten, and they didn't even
have to kill it.

But 80 minutes after gorg-
ing themselves on the carcas-
ses, the coyotes became violent-
ly ill, And since the experiment
was carried out some months
ago, hardly a single*sheep has
been attacked.

“The coyotes are very”
adaptable animals and they
learn’ their lesson after one
experience, Now the coyotes
associate nausea with the taste
of the meat,” said Ellins.

monitored through its radio-
equipped collar, These animals,
which are on the verge of

watersheds,

Animals are being snared,
immobilized, radio collared and
released to enable wildlife re-
searchers to follow their daily
movements over difficult ter-
rain and through thick forests.

Knowledge of behavior,
habitat requirements, . food
habits, population structure
and seasonal movements will be
obtained in the natural en-
vironment with the ‘aid of
modern radio technology.

Such information is essen-
tial to assist the various re-
source managers and users to
develop the Flathead and other
ecologically similar areas in a
manner which will ensure the
future of grizzlies, wolves and
associated wildlife and their
habitats.

Two grizzlies have also
been trapped and radio col-
lared. The Fish and Wildlife
Branch intends to capture and
radio collar four more grizzly
bears this spring in order to
establish a significant sample
population for study. These
collared animals are very valu-
able and it is expected that bear
hunters will refrain from shoot-
ing bears affixed with black
collars and colored ear tags.

It is strongly recommend-
ed that the public avoid the
posted bear trapping sites be-
cause of the extreme danger
posed by snared grizzlies which
are liable to break free and
attack if disturbed. Hunters are
also reminded that it is illegal
to hunt from these baited trap
sites.
