Dr. Peter Jannetta said the surgery lowers blood pressure because the tiny swatches of plastic felt relieve abnormal! pressure from blood vessels on nerve cells that tell the heart how hard to beat. He said the procedure has succeeded for 36 of 42 patients. In the other six cases, J; tt. i the Operating from inside not supposed to be, and pulse against it,” he said, By repositioning the problem arteries and insulating the key nerve cells with the tiny wads of felt, Jannetta said he can insulate the nerves from the arteries’ rhythmic beating. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a leading cause of heart attacks, kidney disorder and strokes, An estimated 20 million Americans have high blood pressure. About 2% million get little help "from technique was inadequate. He said he has performed the operation on 43 others but has not yet analysed the results. The pressure against the nerves which distorts the brain's instructions to the heart comes from arteries that stretch as a person ages, often forming loops, Jannetta said “They come up against nerve tissue, where they are the preferred treatment, Jannetta said. The 52-year-old Pittsburgh surgeon said he first observed the role arteries in the brain play in high blood pressure in 1973 “when I made two patients hypertensive unwittingly” during surgery. He said the new procedure is an extension of work he did treating dizzyness and ringing in the ears, where he uses similar pieces of soft plastic to insulate certain nerves in the head from the pressure of blood vessels. ‘Discovery of gene helps diabetes NEW YORK (AP) — The discovery of a gene that plays a role in diabetes could ul- timately lead to new treat- ments for the disease that afflicts an estimated one in 20 North Americans. A report published in the British scientific journal Na- ture announced researchers have identified the gene that guides the production of a molecule called the insulin Additives to be OTTAWA (CP) — Non-prescription drugs will soon take on a new look with labels listing non-medical additives known to cause allergic reactions. The move by Canadian drug manufacturers was prompted by growing public concern and persuasive lobbying from a number of groups, including the Allergy Information Association in Toronto. Additives to be listed include alcohol, sugars, thickeners such as glutin, artificial coloring such as tartazine and sulphites used in preservatives, said David Skinner of the Proprietary Association of Canada, which represents manufacturers of non-prescription drugs. Labels will be changed as product stocks are depleted, listed on labels unnecessary illnesses will be eliminated as people who know they can't tolerate something will see the offensive ingredient listed and will avoid the drug, said Dr. Douglas Stevens, co-author of a Canadian Medical Association Journal article that proposed such a step. EXAMINES METHODS The prescription drug industry is planning a similar move with a force currently looking at effective methods of listing additives on Prescriptions, said Gordon Postlewaite, of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associ- ation of Canada. While recommendations are scheduled to go before the with the first new labels probably hitting drug store shelves this summer, he added. Allergy association director Susan Dalglish who called the move “an excellent first step” said she would prefer to see every additive clearly listed, regardless of whether it has ever been known to cause an adverse reaction. In a technique called ar. throscopic surgery, surgeons no longer have to cut open the knee, slicing through muscle and other healthy tis- sue. Now they operate with after undergoing arthroscop- ie surgery on her right knee. Arthroscopy came into prominence in the early 1970s as a diagnostic tech. nique and full surgical pro- cedures followed only in the last 10 years, Micheli says. In arthroscopic surgery, the surgeon inspects the joint by inserting a tiny telescope, about as long as a pencil and tiny instruments inserted about two-thirds as ide. through small skin punc- The view can be magnified tures. and shown on a television Because the procedure is less irritating to the knee, patients usually can return to an office job in a few days and athletes in perhaps two to three weeks, about half the time required previously, says Dr. Marvin Bloom, chairman of the orthopedic surgery department at the Ralph K. Davies Medical Centre in San Francisco. Dr. Lyle Micheli, director of the division of sports med icine at Children's Hospital in Boston, said arthroscopy also allows more precision, re ducing complications that slow recovery. Some recoveries from ar. throscopic surgery have been dramatic. Joan Benoit, winner of the women’s Olympic marathon last summer at Los Angeles, also finished first in the U.S. Olympic trials, only 17 days screen. “It’s like your eye is on the end of a long stalk right inside the knee, so you can actually see better,” Bloom says. Through one or two other punctures about one-sixth of a centimetre long, the sur. geon manipulates tiny in struments to cut, bite, suck or shave. Surgeons often used to re- move an entire cartilage if a portion was torn because they had relatively large in struments and could not see enough details to remove only the torn part. Arthroscopy can also be used in stapling a tendon grant to replace a torn knee ligament, fixing .a disloca- tion-prone shoulder, remov- ing bone chips and spurs and performing other proce dures. Prescription stickers will list only those non-medicinal ingredients known to cause problems, as listing them all “would confuse the consumer,” he added. Most drugs contain about four basic additives and rather than regulate the listing of additives, the federal Health Department has asked drug producers to voluntarily comply, said Dr. Ian Henderson, head of the department's drug bureau. Legislation in the United States requires complete labelling of all food, drug and cosmetics that contain more than one ingredient, no matter how unimportant the ingredient is felt to be. receptor, which allows hu- man cells to respond to in sulin. “It is probably the most important hormone receptor in the body” and is found on “basically all cells in the human body,” said one of the researchers, Axel Ullrich of the San Francisco-based Gen- entech Inc. “In the long run, this re- ceptor and other types of re- ceptors will be very impor- tant in the development of new kinds of drugs,” he said. “We can probably use the computer to design new drugs that will have an effect interacting with the recep. tor.” Ulrich said the discovery could make possible prenatal diagnosis of certain forms of diabetes in which patients have a normal supply of in sulin but appear to have de- fective insulin receptors. Dr. Ora Rosen of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Cen- tre in New York, who worked with G h diabetes in the near future but would be useful in study- ing the illness. “The more you know about how insulin works and how insulin receptors work, the more ideas you get about what goes wrong in patients with diabetes,” she said. Diabetes is a poorly under- stood illness in which the body's ability to convert sugars and starches into energy is disrupted or im- paired. Insulin and the in- sulin receptors help to regu- late that energy production. Dr. Ron Ford said many people do not realize that when doctors say don't eat or drink anything at least six hours before an operation, they mean even a few gulps of liquid. “If anything is on the stomach, even a glass of water, there is a chance it could be thrown up and as- pirated into the lungs, caus- said the finding was not likely to help anyone with ing y failure.
