ENTERTAINMENT Forgotten Greene novel a hit By RONALD THOMSON LONDON (REUTER) — A Graham Greene novel, forgotten in Hollywood 41 years ago, has become a publishing event of 1985. Called The Tenth Man, the manuscript was discovered in the archives of MGM studios. It is a tale of cowardice and retribution with all the ingredients familiar to readers of the popular and critically acclaimed 80-year-old British author. Greene says he forgot all about the seript. Four years after writing it, he subtracted seven numbers from the title and wrote The Third Man in 1948. His literary star rose to dizzy heights after The Third Man became a hugely successful movie set in postwar Vienna and starring Orson Welles. In a forthcoming book of his own, the publisher describes how he failed at first to win Greene's blessing for giving the public a chance to read The Tenth Man. The Tenth Man is set in a French provincial town occupied by the German army in the Second World War, When the French Resistance kills two German soldiers, the Nazis retaliate by ordering the execution of one local hostage in every 10. The hostages must decide among themselves who is to die. A wealthy lawyer draws the short straw and in a panic offers all his worldly goods to any other prisoner who will take his place before the firing squad.
