Moscow dissidents Alex. ander Ogorodnikov and Tamara Grigoryants said streets around the opera house in Yerevan, capital of SEER Soviet Armenia, were mob bed by people demanding t) return of a small mounfain. ous region to the Armenian republic. Grigoryants said a region in the Caucasus Mountains named Nagorno-Karabakhsk- aya was deeded to the neigh- boring Soviet republic of Azerbaijan in the 1920s, even though the majority of its inhabitants are Armenians. The Associated Press tele- phoned a woman who said she lives on the outskirts of Yerevan, about 1,700 kilo- metres south of Moscow. The woman, who requested an- onymity, said demonstra- tions also occurred in Nag- orno-Karabakhskaya ‘during the weekend. SOVIETS COMMENT In an unusual move, the government. acknowledged the earlier protest Tuesday noting a “breaching of public order” by demonstrators who “contradict the interests of the working people.” The government _ state- ment was carried by the official news agency Tass. Grigoryants said that earl ier this month the local government council asked that ‘the disputed region become part of Armenia. The request was rejected by the Communist party Central Committee, she said. Although Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's policy of glasnost, or openness, has allowed some public expres: sion of discontgnt or dissent, relations among the Soviet Union's more than 100 nat- ionalities remain. a sensitive issue. Gorbachev told the Central Committee on Feb. 18 that developing a nationalities policy is “the most vital, fundamental issue of our society.” Lifeline helps sick CHARLOTTETOWN (CP) — There was a time when the prospect of living alone seemed a frightening venture for those with serious medi cal problems. But a little electronic de vice that can be worn on a chain around the neck is ban. ishing those fears for several ailing Prince Edward Is- landers. Called Lifeline, the button sized innovation developed by an American medical re- searcher in the mid 1970s is a portable personal help line. The bearer can use the button, in times of emer- gency, to activate a home telephone that dials into a computer at a nearby hospial. Medical staff can then pull the appropriate files and call a relative, friend or neighbor to check on the person. Eliza Ramsden, 92, lives alone, but because she has weak spells, Lifeline makes her feel more secure. “It’s a wonderful thing to have.” Mrs. Ramsden’s neice, Beryl Semple, says she’s less anxious about her aunt living alone, knowing she has the Lifeline. Dr. Kent Ellis, who has three patients on the Lifeline system, says they feel better about themselves if they can remain in their homes. “Our aim is to keep people in their homes as long as we can, and this is one way of doing it,” he said. “Lifeline could be a potential life saver, since early treatment is often vital, particularly for cardiac or conpeniony pat- ients.” SYSTEM IN USE More than 2,000 health care facilities in Canada and the U.S. are using the system developed by Boston Uni- versity professor Andrew Dibner. The system lets elderly or handicapped people stay in their own homes. It's cheaper than institutional care and allows families and friends to relax, knowing they will be contacted when needed. In Pri Edward Island, Prince CoWwty Hospital in Summerside installed the system in December 1986 and now has 35 users. ““BUCK-PASSER ADS” $1 for 10 words for uh x SPECIAL ON CLASSIFIED ADS THis AD Offer expires at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 30, 1988 BRING OR MAIL US $1 AND WE'll RUN YOUR 10-WORD AD FOR $1 FOR 1 TIME. $2 GETS YOU A 10-WORD AD FOR 3 CONSECUTIVE INSERTIONS !
