CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, July 26, 1978 BOB FERGUSON'S SPORTING FACTS Presented with the compliments of CASTLEAIRD HARDWARE & SPORTING GOODS i “How many Canadians have held the world heavyweight boxing title?”—Y. D. Norman, Flin Flon, Man. The evolution of the fistic art saw introduction of gloves and three-minute rounds in 1892, thus launching boxing's modern era. Since then, Noah Brusso, better known as Tommy Burns, of Hanover, Ont., who held the world crown from 1906-08, is the lone Canadian to hold the ring game's top award. In the pre-modern era Charley Gallagher (birthplace uncertain) and John L. Dwyer of St. John's, Nfld., were the Canadian heavyweights of ring prominence. . * * “What is Boccie?”"—K. V. Tanner, Medicine Hat, Alta. Boccie, pronounced “bott-chee", is an Italian bowling game layed in a 60x10-foot box with a hard dirt surface and may be played indoors or outdoors. This, coupled with a low cost for make it a fine I sport and, although popular in Burope, it is still not widely played in North America. Like lawn bowling, Boccie employs a jack ball and scoring is determined by a single point awarded for every ball of one side or player closer to the jack ball than the closest opponent's ball. The game can be played by two, four or eight players divided into two teams. Twelve points constitute, a game. Got a question on sports a like answered? Se Both Spotted and Wood Frogs Best Befs for KC Days Race This Saturday is the day of the third annual Lions Club Frog Jumping Contest. To avoid disappointments and to ensurea keen competition, local naturalist Bill Merilees offers the following information. What Frogs are the Best Jumpers? ‘The Western Spotted Frog, the Northern Wood Frog and the Pacific Tree Frog are the three species found locally. One Toad is also here but being a poor jumper (they waddle) it is not recommended for competi- tion. % Size is not really important, but experience shows that the Tree Frog cannot compete favorably with its two larger brethren. Of the remaining two, the Wood Frog is perhaps the better, as it took top place last year. However, the Spotted Frogs entered were on the large side, and I would think a smaller two-inch Spotted could possibly beat out the Wood Frog. Large Spotted Frogs tend to fall a little short on the long jumps required for a winner. Consult the Provincial Museum publications on Am- phibians for details on these at your local library. Proper Care is Important! An expired frog is a poor jumper! Once captured, place your frog in a clean ice cream pail or some similar container with a few holes in the lid. In addition to about a quarter-inch of water, place a piece of moss that covers about half the bottom. Then keep your frog in a cool place. If you feel the frog needs feeding, give him a few live flies. Good luck, see you on Saturday! . Anyone for Tennis? Safe Boating, Water Skiing Clinics Siated Safe boating and water skiing clinics are to be held in the West Kootenay area next month reports Greg Thomas of Castlegar, field supervisor for the Red Cross-Royal Life Saving Society. There will be another safe boating clinic held at the Trafl pool at 12 noon on Aug. 12 and again the same day at 5 p.m. at Champion Lake. Water skiing clinics will be held Aug. 8 and 9 at Christina Lake, Aug. 11, 12 and 13 at New Denver, and on Aug. 15 and 16 at Nelson. This includes all beach fires. Loca! forest ranger Hugo Wood points out that the fire hazard in the Nelson district is _extreme, especially in valley areas and southern slopes. He said there has been no night recovery period. © Ranger Wood says the present ban on campfires does not include those used at approved camp sites where there is a fireplace. He emphasizes that there must be a regular fireplace already built. The use of such camping items as Coleman stoves is permissible and so are barbe- cues, although Mr. Wood stresses the need for great care, Mr. Wood recommends that people keep a pail of water on hand when using fires of any kind, especially barbecues. He said campers using barbecues should dump the briquettes into the water, not pour water on them. He said the coals remain hot for a long time and the only way to sure they're completely out is to submerge them in water.
