The following is a report by Regional Recreation Com- mission No. 1 director, Jack Alouf, on the recent Health and Physical Activities Conference attended by him at Vancouver: The main theme of the conference was action, Going along with this theme the agenda for the conference was packed with action sessions throughout each day with special workshops going later for some delegates. There were a little over 300 delegates and everyone was well involved. Main concerns of the conference were general health conditions of the average Canadian with constant refer- ence to the study that showed the physical conditions of a 35-year-old Canadian male be- ing on a par with a 60-year-old Swede. Serious concern was ex- pressed regarding diet and nutrition. Here it was, stated that we do not take enough care over what we eat. In particular, we eat far too much high cholesterol foods which is among major factors leading to heart disease and heart attacks. While there are a few schools that do make this effort, they are minimal, What is required is an official physical education program for primary grades, Concern was also voiced regarding the way physical education is handled at the junior and senior high school levels with reference to con- centration on one or two particular sports and not d education in the « yy Par basically a health promotion organization on a big scale and it has been proven in a pilot project in Saskatoon where the city, in conjunction with the federal government, went all out to get people involved in some sort of physical activity, everything from a block-walk to regular sports, Participation was well're- ceived by the conference and almost. unanimously ondorsed by the delegates, As a follow-up ‘to the conference and an effort to get action underway in our respec- tive communities, Mr. Cocke . stated that expenses would be paid to each area for the first area meeting to be held following the conference in each of our respective areas, He also stated that ABC—Action Bri- tish Columbia—in conjunction’ with Participation Canada will start organizing immediately. Or a “film” on windows and mirrors?
