a possibility OTTAWA (CP) — Unless the Bank of Canada decides to do away. with paper money, Canadians will. be folding their dollars for many. years to come. Despite recent reports, the Royal Cansdian Mint can't have any plans to reduce billfolds. to. change purses because! it doesn't have the authority, said Denis Cu- dahy, vice-president of manu- facturing for the mint. That responsibility lies with the Bank of Canada, he said in an interview. What the mint can, and is, doing is trying to develop a better coin dollar. Those dollars:have been in circulation since 1935, and the current design, ‘used since 1968, is too heavy and too large to be popular, Cudahy said. The 1968 model is nickel, 15.6 grams in weight and 82,1 milimetres in diameter. “We're looking at an alter- native so it would circulate more freely.” ‘Toward that end, the mint has been working on possible shapes and sizes.and consult- ing various groups, such as transit authorities and vend- ing machine associations, for input and reaction, 18 COMPLEX ISSUE . But designing a new coin is complex — size, weight,. di- ameter, shape and’ ore all have to.be considered. “We have to have a coin EY that will work in with all other coins," Cudahy. said. In addition, it has to be | identifiable for such groups as the blind.” When a satisfactory. coin has been designed, the mint will produce — significantly more coin dollars than the two million to three ‘million now circulated annually, he said. : But he did not elaborate on the, amount -or how ‘long: it could take:to develop. an’ ac. ceptable coin. . |» pie A new:$1'coin has been’ under~ study for several : years, Alyre Cormier, director of the Canadian Urban Transit Assoication, has, submitted briefs to Supply and Services NATURE LOVER'S VARADIS: wild flowers ‘provides excel Minister Jean-Jacques: Blais and. He. cited addi- tional factors, including price, delivery schedules and qual- ity. Regan. said the ' require- ments of the law governing such loans by the. U.S. Im- port-Export Bank thus had not been fulfilled.
