MAZDA RX-7

he pure sports care is a rarity these

F days. Even most builders of*perfor-

mance machines feel they must

broaden the appeal of their products by incor-

porating a full range of creature comforts and

adequate luggage capacity. Mazda brooked no

such compromises when it designed the latest
version of the RX-7.

This two-seater is a minimalist machine,
with a sensuous body tightly wrapped around
a compact 255-hp turbocharged rotary engine,
a sophisticated chassis, and space for two
occupants. This single-minded design and
some ruthless weight-saving measures make it
the lightest car by far in its class.

The RX-7's competitors all deliver plenty of
speed and roadholding, but none has the same
instant reflexes. On a racetrack, the RX-7
lunges from comer to comer and enters turns
as hard as a formula car. We might not want to
drive an RX-7 in some of Michigan's miser-
able weather, but it's one of our.favorite choic-
es for Sunday-morning blasts.
