New Pastor
Installed
At St. Peter

Rev. Lowell Bruce Kinds-
chy was installed as new pastor
of St. Peter Lutheran Church in
Castlegar in ceremonies held
Sunday.

Pastor Kindschy was born
in Denver, Colo, where he
attended Lutheran Elementary
School. He moved to San Ber-
nardino, Calif. where he grad-
uated from high school in 1969,

In 1970 he entered the
ministerial program at St. John
Junior College, Winfield, Kan,
He graduated from Concordia
Sr, College, Ft. Wayne, Ind. in
1975 with a BA degree.

He then attended Concor-
dia Theological Seminary at
Springfield, IN, later moving to
Ft. Wayne when the Synod

Here we are, approaching
another long weekend. They
come along once a month, these
days. This time it's the Labor
Day weekend.

I must confess I'm not sure
just what Labor Day is sup-
posed to be for. Perhaps it
started as a day for the upper
classes to give a nod to the
nameless millions whose sweat
in factory and field made
possible their affluence. In our
churches we like to sometimes
use Labor Sunday to remind
ourselves that hard-work and
creativity are among the most
satisfying of human activities.

I happen to like this last
idea. I've been able to move
from a subdivision to the coun-
try, where a bit of hard work
has become a necessity.

I like it’that way. Human
beings were not meant to stay
indoors, endlessly sitting, exer-
cising little more than their
brain and their tongue, the way
some people pass day after day.

Pope John Paul I pledged
Sunday in his first message to
the world to follow the pro-
grams of Pope Paul VI and
appealed for a new order with
more justice, a more stable
peace and more sincere co-
uperation among peoples of the
world.

In his first full day as
pontiff, Pope John Paul, 65,
looked out at the 200,000 people
gathered to greet him in St.
Peter's Square and told them:
“[ do not have the wisdom or
the heart of Pope John or the
preparation or culture of Pope
Paul. But I am in their place. I
must try to serve the church. I
hope you will help me with your
prayers.”

The Vatican said the new
Pope, the former patriarch of
Venice, Albino Cardinal Lu-
ciani, will be crowned next
Sunday. Coronation details
were not disclosed.

Give me some hard work to
do, either at work, or after
work. I feel better that way.

And yet, I'm not sure if
Labor Day is supposed to have
anything to do with that idea at
all. It’s just what happens to
make sense to me when I try to
make sense out of Labor Day.

It's the same with quite.a
few other holidays.

Quick,.now. What was last
May 22, and what was the
holiday for?

You see what I mean. We
just don’t have a clear idea
what some of our holidays are
all about. For most of us,
they're just another welcome
long weekend.

Which is too bad, because
it's actually a good idea to help
people to think about some-
thing important by giving them
a day off to think about it.

Nov. 11 still works that
way for many of us. I know I

-ean't get through Nov, 11
without thinking about the men
and women who died in battle.

The word “holiday” actual-
ly means “holy day,” a special
day set apart to bring to our

attention something important,
and usually very sacred.

Christmas and Easter cer-
tainly retain this holiness for
most of us. So does Sunday, for
many, come as a weekly re-
minder of our Creator. It's good
to be able to take time out, at
least once a week, to think
about God, and to join with
others and worship Him. We
can do other things with our
weekly holiday too, but in-
eluding God on Sunday is. good
for us. We need to be reminded.

Getting back to Labor
Day: whether you think of it as
a thank-you to workers who
provide for us, or a reminder
that hard work is good for us
all, or a chance to reflect on
labor-management relation-
ships, let's try to put some
constructive meaning into this
Sept. 4.

There's a lot to think
about, if we're going to keep
our country a good place to live.
A holiday can come as a
necessary reminder that it
takes more than just doing our
own thing on a long weekend to
ereate the good life.

Have a good holy day.

stallation, with Rev. H. Clark as
liturgist. Other pastors present
were Rev. H. Haberstock of
Creston and Rev. R. Klein, the
former pastor.

Following the installation
service, a potluck supper was
held at the church, and that
evening, a similar service was
held at St. John's Lutheran
Church in Nelson.

the provincial Human Rights

is a full day for all Schoo! District #9 students. Buses
will be operating on thelr regular schedules.

Tuesday, September Sth, is an in-service day at
each District School for teachers only.
