GROWN HEAD LETTUCE cities and places to dine — ‘and above all — to medieval banquets, “I'd go back to York octorrow it had the chance,” said . “It wears its 2,000 years of history with comfort and icatie It's instant and total immersion in the ages.” “But we were lucky in York,” said Bunny,-“From the taxicab driver who picked us up at the railway station and gave us a thumbnail guide talk on the city all the way to our excellent guest house, to that retired citizen, a @ member of a typically enthusiastic group of Yorkists whose hobby is taking visitors on walking tours of the city. The Minster stands on its own as does the music but we were lucky to meet the Minster organist and find that we had a common acquaintance, “Don't forget that we were lucky enough to also find the best fish-and-chips-in-a-newspaper in Britain there, and saw the great Celtic chalk horse carving on the hillside.” - “T'd go first to Ely,” said Bunny, “It’s smaller and more intimate, with that gem of a cathedral crowning the only hill in the area and the lovely, lovely pub-cafe just behind it. Finding that was absolute luck. Or maybe I'd go to the Isle of Skye and the village of Uig. Still smaller, but what beauty and peace.” “How about a trip by coastal steam to the Western Isles with a stop off at the Isle of Lewis. There is a stone ring there which is second only to Stonehenge,” said I remembering that magic place. Ultimately this verbal touristing arrived at the subject of medieval banquets. They started sometime after the war and are in part a kind of ‘return to the past’ movement which is very popular in Britain and in part a kind of nightclub evening-out which has become increasingly popular with tourists and citizens alike. Purists will of course sniff and look down their noses, but for a combination of Fantasy Island, escapism, historic atmosphere and pure fun, they are hard to beat. Our first experience with them was at the Elizabethan banquet at Hatfield House banqueting hall, a favorite palace of the first Elizabeth. We had gore the previous day for a boat trip up the Thames to visit Windsor Castle. It was on this same piece of water that Queen Bess had travelled in the royal barge 400 years ago from London. And so little changed is it that if it were not for the jumbo jets howling ‘overhead every two minutes and if the fisherman on the shrub-grown bank were costumed in the clothes of the time, . Lam positive that the queen would have noticed nothing strange. ~ ‘When we arrived at Hatfield House (usual English understatement — the place is big), we were all dressed in our best bib-and- tucker, but all keeping very much to among ‘After a a warm up sherry and a look around at the Elizabethan memorabilia we were invited to be seated at the long benches with the long heavy wooden tables. Knives and spoons (no forks), flagons of wine and mead (don’t mix them — some people get quite ill) flat bread and large dishes of salt are on the tables. The courses or ‘removes’ — wholesome and plentiful’ —' are ‘servéd -by the “serving wenches' — pretty local girls — in Elizabethan costume. First we ate, drank, exchanged names and origins, very soon we were drinking toasts to those origins, and to Queen ‘Elizabeth,’ a pretty, auburn girl who sat on a ‘dais. Her ‘court’ — a group of men and women dressed in Elizabethan court costume — sang, danced, played medieval musical instruments for the queen and her guests, while a juggler and a jester provided the lighter entertainment amid general heightening merriment. After a long and pleasant period of dining ‘and entertainment and thumping the table by way of applause (‘ye clappe’ already had a rather sinister meaning in those days), the queen descended and danced a pavan with some of the braver gentlemen. She then spoke to each of the some SELECTED STONEWEAR MUGS 99° Your Choice. rae 2 Colors Choose from. wis Prices Effective June 24, 25 & 26. By train, bus, taxi and walking, it took us all day; and for the cost of which plus the hotel room and the banquet we could have had a three-day tour of ‘Wales. and room and banquet as well. Next time we book a tour. * Our Scottish (Jacobean) banquet took place in a once . great Georgian house-now-hotel near the airport at Prestwick. On that night, contrary to present personal inclinations, we became loyal followers of Bonnie Prince Charlie of about 250 years ago. Initially, our pleasure was slightly marred by a family of ‘ugly Americans’ who had addresses. There is nothing like a common journey to the past to break the ice of the present. On our second trip to Britain we booked two banquets one in Wales and one in Scotland. Ruthen is an ancient Welsh castle repeatedly destroyed © and rebuilt and now part ruin and rose garden, part hotel and banqueting hall, but a lovely place to stay at and dine. Here the total emphasis is Welsh — cuisine, decorations, jokes against the venerable enemy — England — and the music, particularly the music, sung to the accompaniment of that most of it the come to for one purpose — to play golf. “What the hell else is there to do in this blank-blank country?” They didn't like anything at the banquet, either — and said so in firm, loud voices. Fortunately we had met enroute from Glascow, another a young h ist and former soldier, who was just getting over the break-up of his He had ted our that he book at our hotel and try to get a place at the banquet. By ii time the end came and we had sung ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and ‘Will Ye No Come Back Again’ we were ready to stay forever. - However, came the dawn and the flight for home, and we were only half unwilling to depart.
