But not necessarily. Today, there is a new breed of silk that is washable. The silk is being used by designers of sportswear and casual apparel, formerly dominated by such fabrics as cotton fleece and crinkle cotton blends. Designers are catching on to a trend that answers a need for a more luxurious feeling fabric with out the drawback of costly upkeep. Lucinda Jones, a Vancou ver designer who imports silk manufactured to her own specifications, says all silk is h nv in the West Kootenays Fireside Inn Castlegar, B.C. Sat., April 9 AT 9:30 A.M. Midwife supports %: home births LONDON, Ont. (CP) — Parents who believe a low- risk birth can be performed more safely in a hospital than at home are committing “an arrogancy against nature and against God,” says a Dutch midwii ou should only do it in a hospital when something is wrong,” Beatrijs Smulders told a news conference spon- sored by the Association of Ontario Midwives. Smulders said that by allowing doctors and hospi- tals to perform “unnecessary medical intervention, you get a crazy technological ap- proach in which you harm women and babies (and) dis- turb the bonding “between the mother and the child which is vital for the rest of their lives.” win ane of fv tips tor two to the Big Event of Auto Racing - the indy 500. These may turn black and stain the fabric if washed. But the sportswear that Jones and others are making is made from pedestrian weaves such as raw silk noile and fuji, as well as more delicate silks found in even ing wear and blouses, includ ing crepe de chine and char- meuse. “Washable silks are nice for travelling, and to wear for now,” says Marion Tough, co- owner of On The Go bou. tique, which stocks washable silk casual pants and roomy tops imported from the Far East by Jeanne Pierre of Ee OEE, WANTED CLEAN COTTON N RAGS fabric Montreal. But customers need to be educated about washable silk, says Renee Ross-Davies, a sales agent for The Clothes- line, a Vancouver company that sells several collections of washable silk clothing. “The silks should not look brand new,” she says. “They should look worn, comfort- able and very wearable.” Consumers \should not be fearful of silk, says Jones. “Normal wear doésn't age silk, and raw silk stands up to normal abrasion.” However, caution must be taken before dumping silk into the suds. First check the label to be sure the manu- facturer recommends wash ing. Drycleaning is recom mended for silks that may “bleed,” such as some prints and garments in contrasting colors. Most manufacturers of washable silk advocate hand washing using a lingerie soap and cool water, and rinsing well. Hang to dry, because it’s less hard on silk than tumbling on a low heat. Before it's completely dry, cover the silk garment in a clean plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator until cold, then press inside-out or with a press cloth to avoid iron marks. “Silk enjoys soaking,” says Jones, adding that letting the fabric sit in sudsy water removes dirt better than agitation.
